The complete organic bed, bought in the right order
People who move to natural bedding rarely do it one piece at a time, because the first piece shows up the rest. This is every layer we make, in the order it goes on the bed, with the reason each one is there.
From the mattress up: a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, a duvet inside a cover, and a pillow inside a protector and a pillowcase. That is six pieces, or seven if you sleep with a body pillow. Everything here is organic cotton apart from the wool inside the wool duvet and the wool pillow, all of it is certified organic as a finished product under licence GOTS-10229, and all of it is cut, sewn, layered and tufted by hand in New Jersey. The one real decision is the duvet. Cotton if you want a grounded weight and a vegan bed, wool if anyone in the bed runs hot. Buy the sheet set first if you are doing it in stages, because the sheet is the layer that undoes everything underneath it when it is synthetic.

Best for the first thing to buy
Layers of organic cotton batting, hand-tufted so it stays spread. Dense, even and grounded, and vegan. The duvet for someone who likes to feel the weight.
Best for a plant-based bed with weight over you
Hand-tufted organic wool that takes the moisture your skin gives off into the fiber. Dry in July, warm in January, and the duvet couples agree on.
Best for anyone in the bed who runs hot
Same sateen on both faces, a zipper along one side and internal ties for the duvet's corner loops. Our duvets do not go in the machine, so this is the layer that does.
Best for every duvet, from day one
Organic cotton on both faces with a waterproof layer sealed between, zipped all the way round the pillow. It keeps skin oil and sweat out of the pillow, which is what makes a pillow last.
Best for under the pillowcase, on every pillow
A slip-on case with no zip against your face, sold as a pair and sized to our pillows. The sheet set already includes two, so this is for a second set or a second bed.
Best for spare cases, so one is always clean
Cut to the full length of a body pillow, in the same sateen, so the pillow you hug wears the same cloth as the rest of the bed.

Why one piece at a time goes wrong
This is the reason the bed is worth replacing as a whole. The layers are not independent. Moisture has to travel up through all of them, and one that blocks it stops the rest.

Because you sleep hot, and the wool is supposed to keep the air under it dry.

So the moisture your skin gives off stops at the sheet. The wool never gets it, and you are as damp as before.

Which holds heat and moisture at your face, the one place the waking signal comes from. The good duvet gets blamed.

Because one natural layer inside a synthetic stack cannot do its job, and it looks like the material did not work.
Change the whole stack and every layer helps the one next to it. Cotton sheets pass moisture up to the wool, the wool moves it out, the protector keeps the pillow clean, and the bed stays dry from the mattress to the top of the duvet.
Layer by layer
The fitted sheet is the largest surface you touch, and ours has a 15 inch pocket with elastic all the way round so it stays smooth over a deep mattress. The flat sheet goes over you and under the duvet, adds a layer of air in winter, and comes off in summer. It is also the layer that gets washed weekly instead of the duvet.
The duvet is the one real choice, and the cover over it is the washable layer, tied at the corners to the duvet's loops so the two stay together. Under your head, the protector seals the pillow against skin oil and sweat, and the pillowcase goes over that. Every one of those surfaces is the same undyed 300 thread count organic cotton sateen, so the bed feels like one cloth from top to bottom.
The duvet decision
Both duvets are hand-tufted with corner loops, both are certified organic as finished products, and both last 10 to 15 years inside a cover. They are about a pound apart per size, with the cotton the heavier at about 10 pounds in a queen. The difference is behaviour. The cotton duvet is dense, even and grounded, and it stays cool to the touch. It is the duvet for someone who likes to feel the weight, and it has nothing from an animal in it.
The wool duvet takes the moisture your skin gives off into the fiber, up to 30 percent of its own weight, and gives warmth back as the room cools. It is the one to take if anyone in the bed wakes up damp, and the one couples at different temperatures tend to settle on. Sizes, and buying in stages
Duvets and covers come in twin, queen and king, and you buy the cover in the same size name as the duvet going inside it. The twin duvet is 72 by 90 inches and fits a twin or twin XL bed. The queen is 92 by 96 and fits a full or a queen. The king is 96 by 110. Sheets come in twin, full, queen and king, and pillowcases in standard, queen and king to match our pillows.
If you are replacing the bed in stages, the order is sheet set, then duvet and cover, then pillow and protector. The sheet is the cheapest layer and the one that blocks everything above it when it is synthetic, so changing it first means each later piece arrives into a stack that lets it work. Every piece has its own 60 nights, so a stage that does not suit you goes back without undoing the rest.

Yes, if you want the pillow to last. Skin oil and sweat go through a pillowcase into the pillow, and a pillow that has been fed for years is where the weight and the smell come from. The protector zips all the way round, seals the pillow, and does not crinkle.
Sheets, pillowcases and the duvet cover go in the machine weekly, warm or cool, without fabric softener. The duvets stay out of the machine. The cotton duvet is spot clean and sun only, the wool duvet is spot clean or dry clean, and both live inside the cover for exactly that reason. The pillow covers wash and the pillows themselves get aired.
Because nothing is dyed or bleached. Every piece of cotton here is the natural colour it grew, a soft off-white, so the whole bed is one shade by default. It also means there is no dye on any surface you sleep against.

I was leery to try another expensive pillow without some sort of trial period after being very let down by a different company's natural fiber pillow… I don't hear anything at all with the buckwheat!
