The short answer

From the mattress up: a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, a duvet inside a cover, and a pillow inside a protector and a pillowcase. That is six pieces, or seven if you sleep with a body pillow. Everything here is organic cotton, apart from the wool inside the wool duvet and the wool pillow. Every piece is certified organic inside and out under licence GOTS-10229. All of it is cut, sewn, layered and tufted by hand in New Jersey. The one real decision is the duvet. Cotton if you want a grounded weight and a vegan bed, wool if anyone in the bed runs hot. Buy the sheet set first if you are doing it in stages, because the sheet is the layer that undoes everything underneath it when it is synthetic.

The short version, in five lines

  • Six pieces make a complete bed: fitted sheet, flat sheet, duvet, duvet cover, pillow, protector and pillowcase. Seven if you sleep with a body pillow.
  • Everything here is organic cotton apart from the wool inside the wool duvet and the wool pillow, and every finished piece is certified organic under licence GOTS-10229.
  • There is one real decision in the whole bed, and it is the comforter. Organic cotton for a grounded weight and a vegan bed, organic wool if anyone in the bed runs hot. Either one is a duvet insert, so it goes inside the cover and clips at the corners.
  • If you are buying in stages, buy the sheet set first. A synthetic sheet undoes whatever is above it, so it is the piece that changes the most for the money.
  • All of it is cut, sewn, layered and tufted by hand in New Jersey, and a duvet is 10 to 15 years.

A synthetic layer anywhere in the stack undoes the natural layers around it.

This is the reason the bed is worth replacing as a whole. The layers are not independent. Moisture has to travel up through all of them, and one that blocks it stops the rest.

You buy a wool duvet first

Because you sleep hot, and the wool is supposed to keep the air under it dry.

But the sheet is still polyester

So the moisture your skin gives off stops at the sheet. The wool never gets it, and you are as damp as before.

Then the pillow is still foam

Which holds heat and moisture at your face, the one place the waking signal comes from. The good duvet gets blamed.

And nothing seems to have changed

Because one natural layer inside a synthetic stack cannot do its job, and it looks like the material did not work.

Change the whole stack and every layer helps the one next to it. Cotton sheets pass moisture up to the wool and the wool moves it out. The protector keeps the pillow clean. The bed stays dry from the mattress to the top of the duvet.

What each piece is for, from the mattress up.

The fitted sheet is the largest surface you touch. Ours has a 15 inch pocket with elastic all the way round, so it stays smooth over a deep mattress. The flat sheet goes over you and under the duvet, adds a layer of air in winter, and comes off in summer. It is also the layer that gets washed weekly instead of the duvet.

The duvet is the one real choice, and the cover over it is the washable layer, tied at the corners to the duvet's loops so the two stay together. Under your head, the protector seals the pillow against skin oil and sweat, and the pillowcase goes over that. Every one of those surfaces is the same undyed 300 thread count organic cotton sateen, so the bed feels like one cloth from top to bottom.

Cotton for weight and a vegan bed. Wool for anyone who runs hot.

Both duvets are hand-tufted with corner loops, both are certified organic, inside and out, and both last 10 to 15 years inside a cover. The cotton is the heavier, about 12 pounds in a queen against about 9 for the wool. The difference is behaviour. The cotton duvet is dense, even and grounded, and it stays cool to the touch. It is the duvet for someone who likes to feel the weight, and it has nothing from an animal in it.

The wool duvet takes the moisture your skin gives off into the fiber, up to 30 percent of its own weight, and gives warmth back as the room cools. It is the one to take if anyone in the bed wakes up damp, and the one couples at different temperatures tend to settle on. Match the size names, and buy the sheet set first.

Duvets and covers come in twin, queen and king, and you buy the cover in the same size name as the duvet going inside it. The twin duvet is 72 by 90 inches and fits a twin or twin XL bed. The queen is 92 by 96 and fits a full or a queen. The king is 96 by 110. Sheets come in twin, full, queen and king, and pillowcases in standard, queen and king to match our pillows.

If you are replacing the bed in stages, the order is sheet set, then duvet and cover, then pillow and protector. The sheet is the cheapest layer, and the one that blocks everything above it when it is synthetic. Change it first and every later piece arrives into a stack that lets it work. Every piece has its own 60 nights, so a stage that does not suit you goes back without undoing the rest.

Every piece here is certified organic inside and out under licence GOTS-10229 through Oregon Tilth. That covers the cotton sheets, cases and cover, both duvets, the wool and cotton pillows, and the protector. The kapok, buckwheat, latex and Buckwool pillows have an organic cotton cover over a material that carries no certification, and we say so on their pages.

What sizes do I need?

Sheets in your mattress size, twin through king. Duvets and covers come in twin, queen and king, and the cover matches the duvet by name. The queen duvet is 92 by 96 inches and fits a full or a queen bed. Pillowcases come in standard, queen and king to match our pillows.

Do I need a flat sheet if I use a duvet cover?

It is a choice, and most of our customers keep one. A flat sheet under the duvet adds a layer of air in winter, comes off in summer, and is the layer you wash weekly instead of the cover. If you sleep the European way with only a cover, the cover is the same sateen on both faces so it is the right cloth against you.

Do I need a pillow protector as well as a pillowcase?

Yes, if you want the pillow to last. Skin oil and sweat go through a pillowcase into the pillow. A pillow that has been fed for years is where the weight and the smell come from. The protector zips all the way round, seals the pillow, and does not crinkle.

How do I wash the whole bed?

Sheets, pillowcases and the duvet cover go in the machine weekly, warm or cool, without fabric softener. The duvets stay out of the machine. The cotton duvet is spot clean and sun only, the wool duvet is the same, and both live inside the cover for exactly that reason. The pillow covers wash and the pillows themselves get aired.

Why is everything the same colour?

Because nothing is dyed or bleached. Every piece of cotton here is the natural colour it grew, a soft off-white, so the whole bed is one shade by default. It also means there is no dye on any surface you sleep against.

What if one piece does not suit me?

Send that piece back inside 60 nights, and free shipping applies. The rest of the bed stays. Most people know inside two weeks which layer they are unsure of, and it is usually the duvet weight, which is why we make two.

I was leery to try another expensive pillow without some sort of trial period after being very let down by a different company's natural fiber pillow… I don't hear anything at all with the buckwheat! It does stay fresh and cool as well, but most importantly it actually holds my head/neck up and in place. Which allows me to actually get rest instead of always adjusting.
