Circadian vs PineTales

Circadian vs PineTales: which buckwheat pillow is better?

Circadian, on the rows PineTales' own pages give: ours is USA-grown, polished and sterilized hulls in an organic cotton cover, sewn in New Jersey, with 60 nights and hull refills from 5 pounds up; theirs is made in Turkey, China and Vietnam with no returns of any kind.

The PineTales Platinum is a heavy, overfilled buckwheat pillow in a padded bamboo-rayon cover, made in Turkey, China and Vietnam, with no returns of any kind. The Circadian Buckwheat Pillow is USA-grown hulls, air-jet polished and UV sterilized, in an organic cotton cover, filled and sewn by hand in New Jersey, at a lower Standard price than their sale price, with hull refills from 5 pounds up and 60 nights to sleep on it with the return label on us. PineTales ranks itself first in its own post; the rows below are their published facts.

Why ours, in five lines

  1. 60 nights, slept on, with the return label on us and a full refund. Their return page says a pillow that leaves their facility never comes back.
  2. Filled and sewn by hand in New Jersey. Theirs are handcrafted in Turkey, China and Vietnam, in their words, since production left the United States in 2023.
  3. Hulls air-jet polished into flatter, single-sided pieces, up to 68 percent quieter than roasted pyramid hulls. Their one-star reviews describe a bean bag sound and a pillow too hard however many hulls came out.
  4. Organic cotton cover, undyed, under a finished pillow we describe exactly. Their outer cover is bamboo rayon and an unnamed Cool-Touch fiber, with no organic claim on any fabric.
  5. Hull refills sold from 5 pounds up, so the pillow goes back to full years from now. Their only refill is a 1.5 pound bag that fills a travel pillow, per their page.

One table, buckwheat against buckwheat.

PineTales makes several buckwheat pillows; the Platinum Edition is their best seller and the one they rank first, so it is the one in the table. Their wording sits in every cell on their side, and the source is under the table. If you are choosing hulls, the Buckwool Hybrid in the list below is the same hulls with a wool side to turn to.

Buckwheat, side by side.

Both are hull pillows with a zipper, shipped full. The rows that separate them are where the hulls come from and what was done to them, the cover, the weight, and whether the pillow can come back.

What PineTales publishes, in their own words

Materials, their words: Fill: 100% organic buckwheat hulls. All hulls undergo our rigorous 4-stage cleaning and heat-treatment process before they are used in PineTales pillows. Screened, washed, heat treated, and UV treated without polishing away the structure buckwheat pillows need.

Certification, their words: Materials chosen for strength, not just certifications and fabric claims. An organic or GOTS label does not tell you whether the shell is thick, the zipper is strong, or the seams can handle years of weight.

Returns, their words: Due to the hygienic nature of our pillows, all sales are final. Once a PineTales pillow leaves our facility, it never comes back. No restocking. No reselling. You would not want to buy returned underwear. We apply the same standard to pillows.

Where it is made, their words: Our pillows are handcrafted in Turkey, China, and Vietnam using carefully selected natural materials. In 2023 we decided to move our pillow production outside the US.

What they say it is best at, their words: The Buckwheat Pillow for People With Higher Standards. Premium Adjustable Buckwheat Hull Pillow with Dual-Side Bamboo + Cooling Cover. Those seeking a quieter, premium buckwheat pillow: the Platinum Edition is designed to soften the natural rustle and direct hull feel of buckwheat with a padded two-layer cover system.

What they say about this comparison, their words: This comparison is written by PineTales, so it is not an independent third-party review. We make buckwheat pillows. PineTales ranks PineTales Platinum higher than Circadian because PineTales Platinum is judged by the full nightly-use pillow.

Up close

Hulls with the points knocked off.

Most buckwheat pillows are filled with rough three-sided hulls, which is where the crunch comes from. Ours are air-jet polished into flatter, single-sided pieces and sterilized with ultraviolet light rather than a chemical wash, so they interlock quietly and hold your neck where you set it.

What people ask before they choose.

Is PineTales better than Circadian?

Not on the rows that decide it. PineTales says so in a ranking it wrote and published on June 27, 2026, and the post says PineTales wrote it. Its own pages give the rows that matter: their pillow is made in Turkey, China and Vietnam and cannot be returned; ours is filled and sewn by hand in New Jersey, comes with 60 nights and the return label on us, costs less at Standard than their sale price, has an organic cotton cover instead of bamboo rayon, and sells hull refills from 5 pounds up instead of a 1.5 pound bag. Their hull origin is not published; ours is USA-grown.

Does PineTales accept returns?

No. Their FAQ says all sales are final, and their return page, titled Why we do not accept returns, says a pillow that leaves their facility never comes back, with no restocking and no resale, and compares a pillow to returned underwear. Manufacturing defects are covered for the first two months. Ours is 60 nights on a pillow you have slept on, with the label on us and a full refund.

Where are PineTales pillows made?

Handcrafted in Turkey, China and Vietnam, in their FAQ's words; their knowledge center says production moved outside the United States in 2023 and lists Thailand and Bulgaria as well. Orders ship from a US warehouse. Every Circadian pillow is filled and sewn by hand in New Jersey.

Is the PineTales pillow heavy?

Their page puts the Standard Platinum at about 12 to 13 pounds for the whole pillow, and a Signature buyer's one-star review calls it so heavy it is not adjustable. Ours holds about 8 pounds of hulls in a Standard, arrives about a third fuller than most people keep, and the hulls you take out come back whenever you want more height.

Is the PineTales pillow noisy?

Their Platinum page says the padded two-layer cover is designed to soften the natural rustle, and their one-star reviews still describe sleeping on beads and hearing a bean bag with every move. Ours are air-jet polished, which knocks the points off each hull so the pieces slide instead of scrape, up to 68 percent quieter than roasted pyramid hulls, with nothing padded over them.

Are PineTales buckwheat hulls organic?

Their page says 100 percent organic buckwheat hulls and names no certifier or certificate, and the hull origin is not published. We do not call our hulls organic. They are USA-grown, air-jet polished and UV sterilized, inside an organic cotton cover, and we describe them exactly rather than borrowing a certificate for them.

Does PineTales sell hull refills?

One size: a 1.5 pound bag at $29 in the sale, $35 list, which their page says fills a travel pillow. The same page describes 5, 10 and 20 pound quantities and sells none of them. We sell hull refills from 5 pounds up, the same polished and sterilized hulls that fill the pillow.

Why does PineTales rank itself first?

Their post says it plainly: the comparison is written by PineTales and is not an independent third-party review. It scores their Platinum 9.7 out of 10 and lists Circadian without a score. The table on this page uses their own published facts on both sides, with the source and date under every row, so you can check each one.

Which Circadian pillow is closest to the PineTales Platinum?

The Circadian Buckwheat Pillow. Hulls in a cotton cover with a zipper, shipped full, with the hulls polished and sterilized, USA-grown, sewn in New Jersey, and 60 nights to sleep on it. If you are choosing hulls we would put the Buckwool Hybrid beside it, because a wool side gives you a softer, quieter night without giving up the hold.

PineTales or Circadian for neck pain?

Both are firm hull pillows, and hulls flex under your head and then lock. Ours does that with polished hulls, a lighter Standard, refills from 5 pounds up, and 60 nights to find the height, where theirs cannot come back once it has shipped. Set the height first.

Where the PineTales facts come from

Every rival fact on this page was read from the brand's own site on the date shown, and the cell repeats their wording. If PineTales changes a price or a policy, tell us and we will re-check the row.

Polished hulls, sewn in New Jersey, and 60 nights on us.

If you want a buckwheat pillow, buy the one whose hulls were polished and sterilized, that was filled by hand in the United States, and that can come back inside 60 nights with the label on us. If the firmness worries you, the hybrid gives you a wool side to turn to.
