Best Hypoallergenic Natural Pillow

Circadian Organic Cotton Pillow on bed, a hypoallergenic natural fill with no chemical treatments

A hypoallergenic pillow is one that doesn't harbor the things you're allergic to: dust mites, mold, mildew, and the chemical residues that come from synthetic processing. Wool and kapok have natural properties that handle the first three. Avoiding the fourth is a function of supply chain, not fiber. Three Circadian pillows are appropriate for allergy sufferers, and the right choice depends on which allergen is yours.

Organic Wool Pillow

The best pillow for dust mite allergies. Wool is naturally dust-mite resistant because of the lanolin in the fiber and the structure of the wool itself. This is not a chemical treatment that washes off. It is a property of the material that doesn't degrade over time. Wool also wicks up to 30 percent of its weight in moisture, which prevents the humid environment dust mites need to reproduce. GOTS Certified Organic end to end under license GOTS-10229.

Wild-Harvested Kapok Pillow

The best pillow for chemical allergies and reactive airways. Kapok pods drop from tropical trees seasonally and are manually picked clean, then spun and sent to our New Jersey workshop. The fiber reaches your pillow without a single chemical process. Kapok is also naturally resistant to dust mites and mold because of a hydrophobic waxy coating on each fiber wall. The cover is organic cotton. Coming off a down pillow? Watch our conversation on why kapok replaces down, with the full transcript.

Organic Cotton Pillow

The best pillow for textile-sensitive sleepers who want familiar feel. GOTS Certified Organic end to end under license GOTS-10229, which means the cotton was grown without synthetic pesticides, processed without synthetic dyes, and put into the pillow without flame retardants or chemical softeners. Not naturally dust-mite resistant the way wool is, but the removable cover is washable for allergy management.

What we don't include here

The tree-tapped latex pillow is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 at Class 1 (the strictest tier) and FSC certified, clean for most sensitivities, but it is contraindicated for latex allergies (the proteins that cause reactions are the proteins that make the material work). The Buckwool Hybrid contains wool, so it is appropriate for most allergy sufferers but not for those with wool sensitivities. Buckwheat hulls themselves are inert and odorless, but if airborne particulate is your trigger, the small amount of dust in the hulls may need to settle for a few days.

60-night trial. If a fill triggers symptoms, send it back free.
