Natural pillows for hot sleepers

What is the best cooling pillow?

Buckwheat if the surface is what wakes you, wool if it is sweat. Most pillows sold as cooling do the same thing: they soak up your body heat, warm to match you in about twenty minutes, then hold that warmth till morning.

The short answer

Buckwheat if it is the surface temperature waking you, because air keeps moving between the loose hulls and carries your heat out. Wool if it is sweat, because it takes up to 30 percent of its own weight in moisture before the surface ever feels damp, and damp air at your face is what your brain registers as too hot. Both beat any gel, because a gel is only ever holding borrowed cold and gives it back inside about twenty minutes.

Coolest surface
Buckwheat, air moves through the gaps between hulls
Best for sweat
Wool, up to 30% of its weight in moisture before it feels damp
Coming from foam
Tree-Tapped Latex, cut into pieces so heat can leave
Why gels fail
They match your body temperature in about twenty minutes and stay there
What we do not use
Phase-change gels or cooling finishes, nothing to wear off
Night sweats
Start with wool, then look at the wool duvet
Where it comes from
Buckwheat hulls grown in the USA, cotton grown in Texas, wool from New Zealand certified organic farms, kapok wild-harvested in Indonesia, and every pillow cut, sewn and filled by hand in New Jersey
What is not in any of them
Nothing is sprayed on any of them, so there is nothing in one to wear off or to breathe in. Memory foam, polyurethane, flame retardants and cooling gels are absent because none of them was ever put in

The short version, in five lines

  • Hot sleeping is two different problems, and they take different pillows: a hot surface is an airflow problem, and waking up damp is a moisture problem.
  • Buckwheat answers the first. Air keeps moving between the loose hulls all night and carries the heat out, so the surface never builds a warm hollow.
  • Wool answers the second. It takes moisture into the fiber, and The Woolmark Company puts the ceiling at 35 percent of the fiber's own weight before it feels wet. We publish 30 percent.
  • In a 2019 study at 30 degrees, people in wool fell asleep in 12.4 minutes against 26.7 in cotton and 21.6 in polyester. Wool is not only the warm-room fiber people assume it is.
  • A cool-touch finish is a coating. It feels cold for about twenty minutes, matches your body, and then stops. There is nothing sprayed on any of ours to stop.

Six ways to sleep cool, handmade in New Jersey.

Why gel pillows quit

Cooling and cold are two different things.

A cold pillow feels wonderful for the first few minutes. Then your body heat soaks in, the gel or the cool-touch cover warms to match you, and twenty minutes later you are lying on something exactly as warm as the rest of the bed.

1

It feels cold to the hand

That is the sales moment. A gel panel in a shop really is colder than the room, and it tells you nothing about hour four.

2

Your body heat goes into it

The gel takes your warmth in, which is the only way it can feel cool, and it keeps taking until it runs out of room.

3

It matches your temperature

About twenty minutes in, the pillow and your head are the same temperature. The cool was borrowed and now it is spent.

4

It holds that warmth till morning

There is nowhere for the heat to go, so you turn the pillow over and buy yourself another ten minutes.

What keeps a hot sleeper cool all night is a fill that moves the heat out or clears the sweat away, so there is nothing to warm up and nothing to keep chasing.

Damp is what you read as heat

You stay cool because you stay dry.

Your skin gives off moisture all night whether you notice it or not, and most of it lands where your face meets the pillow. Foam and synthetic fiber have nowhere to put it, so it sits in the layer of air against your skin, and damp air at body temperature is exactly what your brain reads as too hot.

Wool takes that moisture into the fiber itself, up to 30 percent of its own weight before the surface feels damp at all. It also gives off a little heat as it absorbs and draws heat back as it releases, so it flattens the swings rather than following them.

Extreme macro of pre-polished USA-grown buckwheat hulls with air gaps between them

The coolest surface here

Air moves between the hulls all night.

Foam is a solid block, so your heat has nowhere to travel and it collects exactly where your cheek rests. Buckwheat is thousands of hard pieces with a gap beside every one of them, and warm air rises out through those gaps while cooler air moves in underneath.

The surface runs 3 to 5 degrees cooler than foam and never builds the warm hollow you have to escape. It is also the firmest pillow we make, which is why it suits hot sleepers with neck pain particularly well.

3 to 5°cooler at the surface than foam
Macro of slow-pour Dunlop latex pieces showing the air channels between them

Coming off memory foam

Cutting the block is what lets the heat out.

Memory foam is closed-cell polyurethane packed tight enough that air cannot travel through it, so everything your head makes stays against the surface. That is the single most common reason people leave it.

Our latex goes into the pillow as pieces rather than one moulded block, which leaves channels running all the way through. Heat travels out through those channels, and none of it depends on a gel or a treated cover that stops working after a year of washing.

Nonegels or cooling treatments involved

How each one keeps you cool, mechanism by mechanism.

There are only three real mechanisms here, and knowing which one you need tells you which pillow to buy.

Cooling mechanisms compared across Circadian fills and common cooling pillows, 2026.
Fill The mechanism How long it lasts
Buckwheat Air moves through the gaps between hulls, carrying heat out All night, every night, for the life of the pillow
Organic Wool Takes the moisture off your skin into the fiber All night, and it is the fiber itself so it cannot wash out
Tree-Tapped Latex Cut into pieces, so channels run through the pillow All night, no coating involved
Wild-Harvested Kapok Hollow fiber, 80 to 90% air by volume All night, with a shake every few days to keep it open
Cooling gel Absorbs your heat until it matches your temperature About twenty minutes
Cool-touch cover Feels cold to the hand on contact Until the surface warms, then nothing
Memory foam None. Closed-cell foam blocks airflow Holds heat against your head all night

Find yours by what wakes you.

The pillow itself feels warm under your head.

Buckwheat. Air moving between the hulls is the most direct fix for a warm surface, and the pillow never builds a hot spot.

Buckwheat Pillow ›

You wake up damp, or with your hair wet.

Wool. That is moisture rather than temperature, and wool is the only fill here that moves moisture off your skin into the fiber.

Organic Wool Pillow ›

You are leaving memory foam and want the same cradle.

Latex. It conforms the way foam does and the pieces leave channels so the heat can get out.

Tree-Tapped Latex Pillow ›

The whole bed is too warm, not just the pillow.

The wool duvet does across the bed what the wool pillow does at your face, and it suits couples who run at different temperatures.

The ones we hear most.

What is the best cooling pillow?

Buckwheat, by feel. Air keeps moving between the loose hulls, so the surface stays cool under your head all the way through the night. If it is sweat waking you more than a warm surface, wool does more for you than buckwheat does.

Is a cooling pillow with gel better than a natural one?

A gel or cool-touch layer is a coating, and it works the way a cold surface works: it takes your heat until it reaches your temperature, which takes about twenty minutes, and then it is just a pillow. Nothing about it moves the moisture that wakes a hot sleeper. Buckwheat moves air and wool moves moisture, and neither of them wears off.

Do cooling gel pillows really stop working?

They cool for about twenty minutes. The gel takes in your heat until it reaches your body temperature, and after that it holds the warmth till morning. Buckwheat, wool and latex never rely on staying cold in the first place, so there is nothing to run out.

I run hot and I have allergies. Is one pillow enough for both?

Wool. It moves the moisture so you sleep dry and cool, and it keeps its own surface too dry for dust mites to settle in. That comes from the fiber and lasts the life of the pillow, with nothing sprayed on to wear off.

Can I adjust how tall they are?

Every Circadian pillow has a full-length zipper and arrives fuller than most people keep it. Open it up and take material out until your head sits level with your spine. Keep what you remove so you can add it back.

What if it does not keep me cool?

Send it back inside sixty nights and you do not owe us a reason. We would rather you find the pillow that works than keep one that does not.

Is a wool pillow too warm for summer?

It is the opposite of what people expect. Wool regulates rather than insulates in a pillow, giving off a little heat as it takes in moisture and drawing heat back as it releases it. The same pillow suits January and August, which is exactly why sheep wear it year round.

What is the best pillow for night sweats?

Wool, without much competition. Night sweats are a moisture problem before they are a temperature problem, and wool is the only fill here that pulls moisture into itself and away from your skin. Pair it with the wool duvet if the sweats reach past your pillow.

Does the pillowcase undo the cooling?

A synthetic or heavily finished case can, because it puts a layer your moisture cannot pass through between you and the fill. Use a breathable natural case. Our organic cotton sateen ones are cut for the job.

Buckwheat or wool for a hot sleeper?

Buckwheat if the pillow feels warm to you. Wool if you feel damp. If you cannot tell which, the Buckwool Hybrid puts both in one pillow and you find out inside a week by flipping it.

Do these work if the bedroom itself is hot?

They help, and they are not air conditioning. What they can do is stop the pillow adding to the problem and stop moisture collecting at your face, which is the part of feeling hot in bed that wakes people. A hot room is still a hot room.

“I have owned more pillows than I have owned houses and I have owned 12 houses.”  This is by far the only pillow to use if you don’t want to wake up with sore shoulders or neck. I have replaced all the pillows in my house with this pillow.

I have compressed discs in my neck, and I have spent hundreds of dollars over the past 6 months trying to find one that will help me sleep. Every pillow I bought caused me to wake up in even more pain than the night before!! The buckwheat pillow is life-changing!! I have slept through the night and wake up with no pain!!
Verified Patty Buckwheat Pillow · August 2026
I was leery to try another expensive pillow without some sort of trial period after being very let down by a different company's natural fiber pillow… I don't hear anything at all with the buckwheat! It does stay fresh and cool as well, but most importantly it actually holds my head/neck up and in place. Which allows me to actually get rest instead of always adjusting.
Verified Morgan Buckwheat Pillow · August 2026
I've been a buckwheat pillow customer for the last 7 years and I can say that Circadian has the highest standards of quality paired with incredible customer service. Very very impressed and would not hesitate to send anyone their way.
Verified Taylor Buckwheat Pillow · August 2026
I have spent years searching for a pillow that feels supportive and comfortable all night. I have finally found it. I absolutely love the Buckwool pillow. I removed a bit of the material to get it to exactly how I want it… I rarely wake up with neck pain now.
Verified Anonymous Buckwool Hybrid Pillow · August 2026
I find myself switching between the two and loving the feel of both. I haven't woken up with a sweaty head with either and that's an amazing feeling especially in the AZ summer. The buckwheat side is a lot quieter and more comfy/soft than others I've tried in the past.
Verified Ashley Buckwool Hybrid Pillow · August 2026
I have tried at least 10 different pillows in the last 3 years. Nothing has worked out except for this wool pillow. I have chronic neck pain which has been greatly reduced. I am very happy with my new pillow.
Verified Anonymous Organic Wool Pillow · August 2026
I have pretty bad chemical sensitivity (housebound most of the time)… I try to only buy totally safe, non-toxic products. I found this pillow to be very safe and non-toxic, and the packaging was fragrance free which is always a huge plus.
Verified Janie Wild-Harvested Kapok Pillow · August 2026
I ordered this pillow to replace my very old (but beloved) down pillow and I'm so glad I did. It is heavenly!… I advise you to heed the recommendation given by the quiz. I ordered cotton initially despite the quiz giving me kapok as a result… the quiz was right.
Verified Hannah Wild-Harvested Kapok Pillow · September 2026
The quality craftsmanship and materials is evident… when I asked if extra stuffing were available for the second one I'm using as a knee pillow, they not only pointed me to the right place on their site, but also created a new, smaller 1-lb. refill size based on my request.
