Our Story

We sell pillows because nobody else was making one we'd sleep on.

Circadian is a direct-to-consumer natural pillow brand handmade in New Jersey. Everything we make is GOTS Certified Organic where the certification applies, and we tell you exactly where it doesn't.

From the founder

A letter from Jacob.

My personal mission is to reset what people expect from the products they sleep on.

Circadian was created because I was tired of buying things that didn't feel worth what I paid, and didn't align with how I wanted to live: outdoors, dialed in, free of worry about what was touching my skin for eight hours a night.

I launched the brand from my apartment in Washington, DC. I designed the collection here, made the sourcing decisions, and partnered with a Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified facility in New Jersey to handmake every pillow.

I am enamored by objects that are intuitive, made with integrity, and deliver on promises. When you find one that does all three, it feels like everything has a place, a purpose, and a reason.

The trust that comes from obsessive design means you never have to worry about the in-between. That's the difference between editing and inventing, and we're always going to choose the latter.

Warmly,
Jacob

Hand-tufting a Circadian organic cotton pillow in our New Jersey workshop
The workshop

Every pillow is hand-tufted in New Jersey.

We partnered with a workshop in New Jersey that has been making natural pillows for four decades. They were the only US workshop we found that was already GOTS certified, that could handle the volume we needed, and that was willing to give us complete control over fill, cover, thread, and stitch pattern.

Every pillow is filled by hand, hand-tufted, and inspected before it ships. The team there knows our pillows by name. When you order, your pillow is built that week.

Most natural pillow brands ship from overseas warehouses. We chose New Jersey because it meant shorter lead times, the ability to fix mistakes the same day, and a supply chain we could actually see.

Certifications

GOTS-10229, where it applies. Honest about where it doesn't.

Most pillows labeled organic only certify the cover fabric. The fill underneath can be conventional cotton sprayed with synthetic pesticides, polyester blended in to lower cost, or chemically softened with finishing agents that don't appear on the label.

Two Circadian pillows (Organic Cotton and Organic Wool) are GOTS Certified Organic end to end: fill, cover, thread, and dye process. The license is GOTS-10229, issued by Oregon Tilth, and it's publicly searchable on the GOTS database.

Our other four pillows aren't fully GOTS certified, and we say so. Buckwheat hulls and natural latex aren't certifiable under GOTS because the standard doesn't cover seed hulls or rubber. Wild-harvested kapok isn't certifiable because GOTS applies to farmed fiber. The covers on those pillows are still organic cotton, just not under a full-pillow certification.

How we sell

Radical honesty about trade-offs.

We tell you what's wrong with a product before you buy it. The buckwheat page leads with the fact that one in five people can't get past the rustling sound. The wool page mentions the faint lanolin scent the first week. The latex page tells you not to buy it if you have a latex allergy.

It's intentional. The buyers we want are the ones who do their research. They've already bought four pillows that didn't work. They're skeptical of marketing claims. If we tell them the truth upfront, they trust us when we say the rest of the page is also true.
