Organic Pillows

Every Circadian pillow uses materials you can verify. The Organic Cotton Pillow and Organic Wool Pillow carry Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification on the finished pillow, the cotton or wool inside as well as the cover over it, under license GOTS-10229. Most brands certify the outer fabric alone. The other four fills (wild-harvested kapok, USA-grown buckwheat, tree-tapped Dunlop latex, and the buckwool hybrid) come wrapped in an organic cotton cover and are made with zero chemical processing.

The Standard We Hold

What "organic" covers

Most pillows marketed as organic carry a certification on the outer cover and nowhere else. The material inside is left out. Two of the pillows above are certified through every one of those components.

01

The whole pillow, not just the cover

The Organic Cotton Pillow and Organic Wool Pillow are certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) as finished pillows, the material inside as well as the cover. The certification follows the materials from the farm to the final stitch.

02

What GOTS bans

Conventional cotton uses roughly 42 million pounds of pesticides per year in the United States. GOTS prohibits synthetic pesticides at the farm level, allows only oxygen-based bleaching (no chlorine), and requires wastewater treatment at every wet-processing facility.

03

Where most certificates stop

Our license number is GOTS-10229, issued by Oregon Tilth. It names an inspection date, a certifying body, and a scope, and the scope on this one is the finished pillow. Most organic pillow certificates stop at the outer fabric.

GOTS License

GOTS-10229

Issued by Oregon Tilth against the Global Organic Textile Standard. The license covers the Organic Cotton Pillow and Organic Wool Pillow as finished products, the material inside as well as the cover over it.

Common Questions

Organic pillow FAQ

What makes a pillow "organic"?
A pillow qualifies as organic when its materials carry third-party certification through every component, not only the outer cover. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) can be issued on a finished product, the material inside it as well as the cover over it, and it bans chlorine bleaching, synthetic pesticides at the farm level, and untreated wastewater discharge at any production facility. The Circadian Organic Cotton Pillow and Organic Wool Pillow are GOTS Certified Organic end-to-end under license GOTS-10229.
Are organic pillows worth the cost?
An organic pillow that lasts 5 to 10 years and resists dust mites and mold without chemical treatment usually costs less per year than a conventional polyester pillow replaced every 12 to 24 months. Natural fills also sleep cooler because they breathe rather than trap heat, and they don't off-gas the way foam pillows can during their first weeks of use.
What's the difference between "natural" and "organic" pillows?
"Natural" means the fill is derived from a plant or animal source (wool, latex from rubber tree sap, kapok fiber, buckwheat hulls). "Organic" is a regulated term that requires third-party certification of the growing, processing, and finishing methods. Every Circadian pillow uses natural fills. The Organic Cotton Pillow and Organic Wool Pillow add full GOTS certification on top.
Which Circadian organic pillow is best for hot sleepers?
The Organic Wool Pillow. Wool wicks up to 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp and releases that moisture through evaporation, which pulls heat away from your head and neck through the night. The Buckwheat Pillow runs the coolest overall because air circulates freely between the hulls.
Which Circadian organic pillow is best for side sleepers?
The Buckwheat Pillow holds firm cervical support through the night without compressing, which is what side sleepers usually need to fill the gap between shoulder and ear. The Buckwool Hybrid is a strong alternative because it offers firm buckwheat support on one side and softer organic wool on the other.
Are Circadian pillows hypoallergenic?
Yes. Every Circadian fill resists dust mites, mold, and mildew without chemical treatment. Wool generates lanolin that is toxic to mites and renders their food source indigestible. The waxy coating on kapok fibers repels moisture, which mites need to survive. Buckwheat hulls go through UV sterilization during processing and contain no organic matter for mites to feed on.
Where are Circadian organic pillows made?
Every Circadian pillow is handmade in a New Jersey workshop that has been making natural bedding since 1981.
How do I adjust an organic pillow to my preferred firmness?
Every Circadian pillow arrives full, roughly 30% more inside than most people keep, and has a zippered opening. To reach your ideal loft, unzip the cover and remove fill until the pillow feels right. Save the removed fill in a sealed bag so you can add it back later if the pillow compresses over time.
What is the return policy?
Every Circadian pillow comes with a 60-night sleep trial. If the pillow isn't right for you, return it for a full refund. Shipping is free within the continental US.
