Frequently Asked Questions
The questions we hear most. If you're stuck on something not here, email us and we'll answer the same day.
The 60-Night Trial
How does the trial actually work?
You order a pillow. Sleep on it for at least a week. If it's not right, email us within 60 nights of delivery and we'll start a return. Pillows are usually picked up by a carrier from your house or you drop them at a UPS/FedEx location with a label we send. Refunds go back to your original payment method within a week of pickup. No restocking fee, no return shipping cost.
What happens to my returned pillow?
It cannot be resold because it's been used in a bed, so it's donated or composted depending on the fill. Cotton, wool, and kapok go to a textile recycler in the region. Buckwheat hulls go to a local farm as bedding for animals or as compostable material. We'll often suggest you keep, gift, or donate the pillow yourself and refund you anyway, because that path avoids the carbon cost of shipping a pillow across the country to throw it away.
Do I have to send the pillow back to get a refund?
Not always. If you let us know you'd rather donate it locally or give it to family, we'll usually refund you on a photo of the donation or just on your word. Saves you the trip and saves a pillow from a landfill.
Sizing, firmness, and fit
What size should I order?
Most people sleep on the Standard (20" by 26"). Queen is wider for combination sleepers who shift a lot. King fits king-sized pillowcases. Travel is for backpacks and overnight bags. Body is for between-knee support or pregnancy. If you don't know, Standard is the safe pick.
How firm is the pillow?
It depends on the fill, and you can adjust every one of them. Every Circadian pillow ships overstuffed by about 30 percent. You open the zipper, remove fill until the loft feels right, and put the removed fill in a bag in case you want to add it back later. So firmness isn't a fixed number; you set it. The product page for each pillow has a Find Your Loft guide that walks through it.
How do I know which fill is right for me?
The two-minute quiz asks five questions and gives you a recommendation. If you'd rather skim, the Six Fills page lays out each option with what's worth knowing.
Materials and certifications
What does GOTS Certified Organic actually mean for a pillow?
The Global Organic Textile Standard audits the entire supply chain, from the farm through the finished product. Two Circadian pillows are GOTS Certified Organic end to end: the Organic Cotton Pillow and the Organic Wool Pillow. Our workshop is GOTS-certified under license GOTS-10229, publicly searchable in the Oregon Tilth database. Full details on the Certifications page.
Is the latex Talalay or Dunlop?
Slow-pour Dunlop. The sap comes out of Hevea brasiliensis rubber trees on FSC certified plantations in Sri Lanka, gets whipped to fold air in, then poured slowly into a mold and baked until the open-cell structure sets. Dunlop is firmer and more supportive than Talalay, and it lasts longer because there are no flash-freeze or vacuum-expand steps that can degrade the cell structure over time. The finished latex carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 at Class 1, the strictest tier in the program (the same threshold used for products designed for direct contact with infants and babies).
What is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1?
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a finished-material safety test for over 100 harmful substances, including PFAS, formaldehyde, heavy metals, pesticide residue, and phthalates. The program has four tiers (Class 1 through Class 4). Class 1 is the strictest tier and is tested to the same safety threshold as products designed for direct skin contact with infants and babies. The Tree-Tapped Latex Pillow's finished latex is certified at Class 1. Most natural latex pillows that carry Standard 100 sit at Class 2 or Class 3 instead.
What does FSC certification mean for the latex pillow?
FSC is the Forest Stewardship Council standard for responsible forestry. On the Tree-Tapped Latex Pillow it applies to the rubber-tree source: the Hevea brasiliensis plantations in Sri Lanka are FSC certified, which means the tapping happens under independently verified responsible-forestry standards. Most natural latex pillows can claim OEKO-TEX Standard 100 on the finished latex but cannot claim FSC on the upstream supply chain.
Are any of the pillows vegan?
The Wild-Harvested Kapok Pillow, the Organic Cotton Pillow, the Buckwheat Pillow, and the Tree-Tapped Latex Pillow are vegan. The Organic Wool Pillow and the Buckwool Hybrid contain wool, which is an animal fiber. If vegan is a hard requirement, kapok is the closest match for the down-like feel some wool-curious shoppers are after.
What if I have allergies or chemical sensitivities?
If you have chemical sensitivities or react to synthetic finishes, the Wild-Harvested Kapok has the shortest supply chain and the least processing of any pillow in the collection. If you have a dust mite allergy, wool is naturally dust-mite resistant because of how the fiber holds lanolin. The resistance is a property of the wool itself, not a chemical treatment that washes off. Latex allergy: pick anything except the latex pillow.
Care and lifespan
How long will a pillow last?
Cotton: 3 to 5 years with periodic fill maintenance, longer with refills. Wool: 5 to 7 years. Kapok: 2 to 4 years (kapok settles fastest). Buckwheat: 7 to 10 years (replace hulls when they break down). Buckwool: 5 to 7 years on the wool side, longer on the buckwheat side. Latex: up to a decade.
Can I wash it?
The cover, yes. Unzip, remove the fill, machine wash the cover cold, tumble dry low. The fills themselves should not go in a washing machine. Wool, cotton, and kapok can be spot cleaned and aired in dry sunshine. Buckwheat hulls can be sun-aired in a single layer to refresh them. Latex pieces should not be wet; if they get damp, set them in open air to dry. A pillow protector keeps the cover clean longer and we recommend one.
Shipping and the buy two, save 15% offer
How long does shipping take?
Most orders arrive in 4 to 7 days. Shipping is free both ways for orders inside the US. If you're outside the US, send us a note and we'll quote shipping individually before charging anything.
How does the "buy two, save 15%" offer work?
Add any two of our pillows or duvets to your cart and 15 percent comes off at checkout automatically. The two items don't have to be the same. Pillow plus pillow, pillow plus duvet, or duvet plus duvet all qualify. The discount applies whether you buy for yourself, for a partner, for a guest room, or as a gift.
Can I send it as a gift?
Yes. Order to the recipient's address and include a gift note at checkout. We don't include prices on packing slips. If they decide it's not right for them, the 60-night trial is theirs to use; they email us, we handle it.
Anything else?
Email us directly and we'll write back the same day. Real humans, founder included.
