Full-length natural body pillows

Your head is only half of side sleeping.

Get the pillow under your head right and your top leg still slides forward across the bottom one, rotating your pelvis and twisting your lower spine for the rest of the night. A body pillow between the knees is what stops that.

The short answer

A body pillow does two jobs at once. Between your knees it keeps your hips stacked so your pelvis stops rotating, which takes the twist out of your lower back and the pull out of the shoulder you are lying on. Hugged in front of you it stops your top arm collapsing across your chest and stops you rolling onto your front. Ours comes in the same four fills as the pillows, so pick by weight and feel: cotton for firm and steady, kapok if you want to move it around easily, wool if you sleep warm, latex if you want spring.

Same fills, more of them.

The body pillow uses the fills you already know from the pillows, in a full-length organic cotton cover. What changes with size is how much the weight and the warmth of the fill matter.

What happens below your waist

Your top leg is pulling your spine out of line all night.

Side sleepers put a great deal of thought into the pillow under their head and none at all into the other four feet of themselves. That is where a lot of unexplained morning back pain comes from.

1

Your top leg slides forward

Gravity takes it down and across the bottom leg the moment you relax, and it stays there.

2

Your pelvis rotates

The hips stop being stacked. One is now in front of and below the other, which twists the joint between them.

3

The twist travels up

Your lower spine follows the pelvis, your ribs follow the spine, and the rotation arrives at the shoulder you are lying on.

4

You wake up sore and blame the mattress

Lower back, hip, sometimes the shoulder. All from a leg that had nowhere to rest.

Something firm enough between your knees keeps the hips stacked and the twist never starts. It is the cheapest fix in side sleeping and the one most people have never tried.

Between the knees

Firm matters more here than it does under your head.

A body pillow between your knees is carrying the weight of your entire top leg all night, which is a great deal more load than your head puts on a pillow. A soft one squashes flat within an hour and you are back to rotated hips without noticing it happened.

Organic cotton is the firmest option here for exactly that reason, and latex is the springiest. Both keep enough thickness between your knees to hold the hips apart until morning, which is the whole job.

In front of you

It also stops you rolling onto your front.

The second job is above the waist. Hugging a body pillow gives your top arm somewhere to be that is not folded across your own chest or trapped under your ribs, and it stops the slow roll forward onto your stomach that undoes everything you set up before you fell asleep.

Stomach sleeping is the hardest position on a neck, because your head has to turn ninety degrees to breathe. If you keep waking on your front, a body pillow is a more reliable fix than trying to remember not to.

Choosing the fill

Weight matters more at this size.

A body pillow is four or five times the volume of a head pillow, so whatever the fill does, it does more of it. Wool that runs cool at head size regulates a whole flank. Kapok that feels light in a pillow becomes the one you can throw over yourself at two in the morning without properly waking up.

That cuts the other way too. We do not make a buckwheat body pillow, because one full of hulls would be too heavy to move and heavier still to sleep against.

The same four fills you know from the pillows, and at this size they behave noticeably differently from each other.

Fill How it behaves at body-pillow size Take it if
Organic Cotton The firmest, holds its thickness between the knees all night Your lower back is the reason you are buying one
Wild-Harvested Kapok By far the lightest, easy to move half-asleep You reposition constantly, or you are pregnant
Organic Wool Moves moisture across a large area of skin contact You sleep warm, and a body pillow would normally cook you
Tree-Tapped Latex Springy, pushes back, longest-lived of the four You want it to last and you like the bounce
Buckwheat Not offered at this size Too heavy to be practical, so we do not make it

Which one is yours.

Your lower back aches in the morning.

Cotton, for the firmness. It has to hold the weight of your top leg all night, and a soft body pillow flattens and lets your hips rotate again.

You are pregnant and repositioning all night.

Kapok, for the weight. It is the one you can move without properly waking up, which matters when you are doing it several times a night.

Body Pillow ›

You sleep hot and a body pillow sounds unbearable.

Wool. It is a lot of surface against you, and wool is the only fill that moves the moisture rather than holding it.

What is a body pillow for?

Two things. Between your knees it keeps your hips stacked so your pelvis stops rotating, which takes the twist out of your lower back. Hugged in front it stops your top arm collapsing across your chest and stops you rolling onto your front in the night.

Does a body pillow help lower back pain?

For side sleepers it often does, and by a specific mechanism. Your top leg sliding forward rotates your pelvis and twists your lumbar spine for hours. Something firm between the knees keeps the hips stacked so the rotation never happens. It will not help a back problem that has nothing to do with how you lie.

Which fill is best for a body pillow?

Cotton if you want firm, and firmness matters more here than under your head because the pillow is carrying your whole top leg. Kapok if you want light and easy to move. Wool if you sleep hot. Latex if you want spring and the longest life.

Are body pillows good for pregnancy?

Many people find them helpful for side sleeping later in pregnancy, both between the knees and to support the bump. Kapok is the one we usually point to, because it is light enough to reposition without waking up properly. Follow your midwife or doctor on sleeping position.

Do you make a buckwheat body pillow?

No. Buckwheat hulls are dense, and a body pillow full of them would be too heavy to move around and uncomfortable to sleep against. The four fills we do offer at this size all make sense at this size.

Can I adjust a body pillow?

Yes, the same way as the pillows. It has a full-length zipper and arrives full, so you take material out until it sits at the thickness you want between your knees. Firmer is usually better here than it is under your head.

How do you wash a body pillow?

Wash the case and the cover, keep the fill dry. Take the fill out, machine wash the cover cool and hang it to dry, then refill. Our organic cotton body pillow case goes in the machine as often as you like.

What size is it?

Full length, sized to run from your shoulder to below your knees for most people. The organic cotton body pillow case is cut to match it, which ordinary pillowcases are not.

Body pillow or two ordinary pillows?

Two pillows work and they separate in the night, which is the whole problem. A single full-length pillow stays as one thing between your knees and in front of your chest, and it does not need rearranging at three in the morning.

Will a body pillow stop me sleeping on my stomach?

It makes it much harder to roll all the way over, which is usually enough. Stomach sleeping is the hardest position on a neck because your head has to turn ninety degrees to breathe, so a physical obstacle tends to work better than intending to stay put.
