Kapok reaches your pillow without the chemical stage most pillow materials go through: no bleaching, softening or finishing. It grows soft inside a seed pod on a rainforest tree, so it never needed any of that. The pods ripen and fall on their own, people gather them by hand, and the fiber is separated from the seeds and cleaned before it goes into the pillow. That is why people with multiple chemical sensitivities, MCS, or reactive airways choose it.

Kapok is lighter and airier than cotton, so a small amount changes how the pillow feels. To lower it, open the side zipper just a little over a large bag and draw some kapok out, so the fiber stays in the bag and out of the air. Add some back the same way when you want more height.

Filled and sewn by hand in our New Jersey workshop. The fiber is weighed, distributed evenly, and sealed into the pillow by people who care about getting it right. We chose handmade because kapok's lightness makes it easy to over-fill or under-fill by machine. Human hands get the distribution right.

Kapok fiber leaves dust mites and mold without what they need, and no pesticide or chemical finish is involved in getting it there. With an organic cotton cover around it, this pillow removes the most common triggers for people with allergies, chemical sensitivities, or compromised immune systems.

Kapok is the lightest natural fiber on Earth, and a pillow full of it feels like a cloud of down under your head. It is soft, it is airy, and there is not a feather in it.

Each strand of kapok is a hollow tube, closer to air than to anything solid. A handful weighs almost nothing and springs straight back open when you let go. A whole pillow of it comes to about 2 pounds.

It stays cool as well. Air moves straight through the middle of every strand, so heat never builds up against your face, and there is no gel layer or coating to wear off after a season.

Feathers are what stop most people from buying a down pillow. Kapok gives you the same soft, collapsing feel and no feathers at all, so there is nothing in it for a feather allergy to find. The fiber also carries its own waxy coating, which sheds water rather than soaking it up, so it stays dry against your cheek. Dust mites need damp air, and they do not find it here.

Kapok grows inside seed pods on Ceiba pentandra trees in the Indonesian rainforest. The pods ripen, split and fall on their own, and people gather them off the forest floor by hand.

That is what wild-harvested means, and it is worth a minute. Nobody farms this. Nothing is planted, watered or sprayed to produce it, because the pods come off trees that were already standing in the forest, and no tree is cut down to reach them.

It also means the fiber reaches you the way the plant made it. Kapok comes out of the pod white, clean and soft enough to sleep on. It skips the bleaching and chemical scouring a fiber usually goes through on its way to a pillow, so nothing is left in it to off-gas a few inches from your face. The usual soft pillow is either polyester, which is a plastic fiber spun in a factory, or down, which is feathers.

Kapok sleeps best as a mound rather than a flat pad. Give it a shake each morning and push the edges toward the middle, and it builds into a soft shape that holds your head. That shake is what keeps it full. It is the difference between a kapok pillow that lasts 3 to 5 years and one that goes flat early. If you want it lower, open the side zipper just a little over a large bag and draw some kapok out, so the fiber stays in the bag and out of the air.

The cover is organic cotton. It is vegan, the kapok breaks down in soil at the end of its life, and it is made by hand in New Jersey.

Researchers have gone looking for the right pillow height and not found one. A 2021 review in Healthcare pulled together the studies on how height gets chosen and reported no optimum for back or side sleeping. It also found that the height which works for a person does not track the measurements of their head or their neck. So there is no number anyone can calculate for you, and a sealed pillow that arrives at one height has guessed.

Vegan down alternative that works

Wanted the down feel without the animal product. Kapok is the closest I've found. Lighter than I expected and you do have to fluff it, but the softness is real.

Wild-harvested kapok. The lightest natural fiber on earth.

Kapok is harvested from seed pods that are dropped from Ceiba pentandra trees in tropical rainforest regions. The pods shed seasonally, so there is no machinery required to harvest them.

Each fiber is a hollow microtube, 80 to 90 percent air by volume, with a wall thickness of one to two microns.

Almost no work is required to turn the raw material into bedding fiber. The pods are manually picked clean, spun, and sent to us. The hollow structure is why kapok is the lightest natural fiber on earth and why it feels like high-quality down. The cell wall has a natural waxy coating that repels liquid water, which is why kapok resists mold and mildew without any chemical treatment. The fiber breaks easily at the touch into looser strands, so a quick fluff returns the pillow to full loft. Nothing was bleached, softened, or chemically treated to get this fiber into your pillow.

Your spine stays neutral when the pillow fills the gap between head and mattress. That gap is different for back, side, and stomach sleepers.

Three sleep positions side by side. Stomach sleeper with a very low pillow, back sleeper with a medium pillow, side sleeper with a tall pillow. In each, a soft gold line traces the spine in a neutral position.

Kapok is best for stomach and back sleepers who want a soft, low, down-like pillow. What's not in the pillow.

Most pillows labeled 'down alternative' are polyester fiberfill. That is fine microplastic strands that shed over time and give off petroleum compounds. I ordered this pillow to replace my very old (but beloved) down pillow and I’m so glad I did. It is heavenly! It feels so good to support such an intentional company. THE best pillows I ever had! I was looking for an organic down feather alternative and the kapok- filled pillow is actually better! Kapok is a completely natural product, stuffed inside an organic cotton cover.

It’s firm enough to support my neck while being soft and moldable at the same time. And I like how the pillows are sent fully stuffed so you have the option of removing some of the filling to customize it to your exact liking.

The kapok fill is incredibly soft and fluffy without feeling like memory foam or one of those overly firm “supportive” pillows. I love that you can remove some of the fill and adjust the loft, because apparently my neck has opinions about pillow height. 😂

I have pretty bad chemical sensitivity (housebound most of the time - asthma and tachycardia in most public locations or other people’s houses). I try to only buy totally safe, non-toxic products. I found this pillow to be very safe and non-toxic, and the packaging was fragrance free which is always a huge plus.

The default amount of stuffing was too firm for me but it does allow adjusting. There was some fiber dust when I changed the amount of filling, but that fiber dust seemed totally nontoxic to me and didn’t give me a chemical sensitivity reaction.

Came from buckwheat to kapok — wish I'd started here

Bought the Circadian buckwheat pillow last year and loved how cool it slept, but I never fully adjusted to the firmness. My sister got a kapok one a few months ago and let me try hers.
