Every pillow, duvet and piece of bedding we sell is cut and sewn by hand in our partner workshop in New Jersey, which has been making pillows since 1981. Made in USA on a bedding label usually means assembled here from material sourced anywhere, and we would rather be specific than lean on the phrase: the buckwheat is USA-grown, the wool is New Zealand-grown and processed in the United States, the cotton is Texas-grown, the kapok is wild-harvested in Indonesia and the latex is tapped in Sri Lanka. What is local without qualification is every step after the raw material arrives.
Every product here goes through the same workshop. What differs is where the material inside it came from, and we will tell you that for each one.

What the label usually means
It is a claim about a final step, not about a supply chain, and in this category the final step is often the only part that happened here.

Fiber, fabric and fill can all come from wherever they are cheapest, and none of that shows on the front of the label.

The workshop
Our partner workshop in New Jersey has been making pillows for more than forty years. The same people cut the cover, sew it, fill it, weigh it and inspect it, and a pillow that fails inspection is disposed of rather than sold on.
Because they build to order rather than to a warehouse, nothing sits in stock for months, and the workshop can put your name on a specific pillow if something goes wrong with it. That is the practical difference a small domestic maker gives you over a container.
Where the material comes from
Buckwheat is USA-grown. Cotton is Texas-grown. Wool is New Zealand-grown and processed in the United States, because the processing capacity for long-staple wool is here and the sheep are not.
Kapok grows in Indonesian rainforest and latex is tapped from rubber trees in Sri Lanka. Neither can be grown in the United States at any quality, so claiming otherwise would be a lie and pretending the question does not arise would be worse. What we can tell you is exactly which country each one came from.
Why it shows up in the product
Every pillow here opens, and that is not a feature you add to something built for a container and a shelf. It costs more to sew, it makes packing harder, and it only pays off if you expect to hear from the customer afterwards.
The same goes for selling refill bags, which quietly reduces how often anyone needs to buy a new pillow. Both are choices that make sense when the workshop is a phone call away rather than an ocean away.

In the United States. The hulls are then air-jet cleaned, pre-polished and UV sterilized before they go into a pillow sewn in New Jersey, which makes buckwheat the most fully domestic product we sell.
Because that is where the long-staple wool we want is grown. It is then processed in the United States and sewn into pillows in New Jersey. We could buy shorter-staple domestic wool, and the surface would prickle against your cheek within a year, so we do not.
No product is. Two of the six fills are grown overseas, because kapok grows in Indonesian rainforest and rubber trees grow in Sri Lanka, and neither is available at quality from a domestic source. Everything after the raw material arrives happens in New Jersey.

Yes. Pillows are built after you place the order rather than pulled from a warehouse shelf, which is why lead times are measured in days rather than hours and why the workshop can trace a specific pillow if something is wrong with it.
Not on its own, and the phrase is nearly worthless as a quality signal, because it describes one step and can be applied to a cover filled in a warehouse. What matters is who did the work and whether you can ask them about it. Ours is one workshop, forty years in, and we will answer questions about any of it.
Yes, Texas-grown, and it is GOTS Certified Organic as a finished product, which means the cotton inside the pillow as well as the cover cloth, under license GOTS-10229 issued by Oregon Tilth. Ask us for the certificate and we will send it.
The bag is virgin polyethylene, which does the job of keeping dirt and moisture off a natural fill through shipping better than the alternatives we have tested. It is the one part of this we get asked about most, and we would rather explain the choice than change it for something that protects the product less.
It is a working production floor rather than a showroom, so not on a walk-in basis. Write to us if you have a real reason to want to and we will see what is possible.
