Slow-pour Dunlop, tapped in Sri Lanka

It holds your head up and springs back.

Latex carries your head the way foam promises to and then stops doing. Press it and it pushes back the same on night one and in year eight, because there is nothing in it that softens when it warms.

The short answer

Tree-Tapped Latex is the pillow people move to when memory foam has let them down. It is buoyant rather than firm, so it holds your head up and returns the moment you shift, and it lasts up to a decade, which is longer than anything else we make. Ours is slow-pour Dunlop, poured slowly so the air settles out and the density stays even top to bottom, then cut into pieces so it stays adjustable and air keeps moving through it. It is tested to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1, the tier written for products for infants.

Why memory foam disappoints

Foam feels supportive, then slowly lets you sink.

Memory foam is designed to respond to heat. That is the feature it is sold on, and it is also the reason it stops holding you. Your head is a heat source resting in one place for eight hours.

1

You press it in the shop

It gives, then slowly recovers. It feels engineered, and it feels like it will hold you.

2

Your head warms it

The material is built to soften with heat, so the part directly under your head softens most.

3

You sink into a warm hollow

The pillow has moulded to you, which sounds ideal until you notice your head is now lower than it started and the hollow is warm.

4

You turn it over

Ten cool minutes, and then the same thing happens on the other side.

Latex does the opposite. It pushes back rather than giving way, and it does not care how warm your head is, so the height you set at bedtime is still under you when you wake up.

How it is made

Slow-pour is why ours does not mat.

The sap goes into the mould pure, with no synthetic blend, and it is poured slowly so the air has time to settle out and the density evens itself top to bottom. Mass-market Dunlop is poured fast, which leaves it denser at the bottom and lighter at the top, and that unevenness is where matting starts.

An even block resists matting for years longer, which is most of why this pillow lasts up to a decade while foam is done in three. We then cut the block into pieces, which is what makes it adjustable and what lets air keep moving through the middle of the pillow.

Where it comes from

The tree keeps growing after you take the sap.

Latex is tapped from Hevea brasiliensis through a shallow downward cut in the bark that opens the vessel network without harming the tree. The cut heals, the tree carries on, and the same trunk can be tapped for decades, which makes a living rubber tree worth more standing than felled.

The finished latex is tested to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1, which is the strictest tier there is, the one written for products intended for infants. It screens more than a hundred harmful compounds including PFAS, formaldehyde, heavy metals, pesticide residue and phthalates.

Why you stay cool

Air moves through the middle, so there is no warm hollow.

A solid foam pillow is a closed block with your body heat trapped inside it. Cutting the latex into pieces leaves channels running all through the pillow, and warm air travels out through those channels while cooler air comes in underneath.

That is why this pillow runs cool without a phase-change gel or a cooling treatment on the cover. There is nothing to wear off, because the cooling is the shape of what is inside.

Make it yours

Give this one weeks, not nights.

It arrives full, about a third more than most people keep. Open the side zipper, take pieces out until your head sits level with your shoulders, and sleep on that height for three nights before you change it again.

Latex keeps settling well past the first night, more than the other fills do, so the pillow you have at week three is not quite the pillow you had at night one. Give it a few weeks before you decide anything. The sixty nights exist so nobody has to judge a pillow early.

Is latex the right one.

Memory foam let you down.

This is the direct swap. You keep the held-up feeling that made you buy foam and lose the sinking and the warm hollow that made you give up on it.

Tree-Tapped Latex Pillow ›

You change position all night.

Latex springs back as fast as you move, so the pillow is the right shape again by the time your head lands. Buckwheat is the other one worth a look.

Tree-Tapped Latex Pillow ›

You want the longest-lived pillow here.

Latex, by a wide margin. Up to a decade, where the fiber pillows run two to five years.

Tree-Tapped Latex Pillow ›

Your shoulders are broad and you need more height.

Add a bag of pieces. Side sleepers with wide shoulders often want more than the pillow ships with, and building it up is as easy as taking it down.

The ones we hear most.

Is a latex pillow better than memory foam?

For most people leaving foam, yes, and for one reason. Memory foam is designed to soften with heat, and your head is a heat source sitting in one place for eight hours, so it holds you well at bedtime and less well by morning. Latex is unaffected by warmth, so the height you set is the height you keep, and it lasts up to a decade against the two or three years foam typically gives.

Do latex pillows smell?

There is a mild rubber smell for the first few days, the smell of the material itself rather than a chemical finish. Leave the pillow out of its wrapping in a ventilated room and it fades. It is a different thing from the chemical off-gassing of new foam, which can run for weeks.

What kind of latex is in a Circadian pillow?

Slow-pour Dunlop, made from pure tapped sap with no synthetic blend. Pouring slowly gives the air time to settle out so the density evens itself top to bottom, and an even block resists matting for years longer than the fast-poured version most pillows use. The block is then cut into pieces, which is what makes the pillow adjustable and keeps air moving through the middle of it.

Can I use a latex pillow with a latex allergy?

Speak to your doctor before you try one. Latex allergy is a response to proteins in natural rubber, and while processing removes most of them, we will not tell you it is safe for you. If you have a diagnosed latex allergy, the Wild-Harvested Kapok pillow gives you a similar springy lightness with no rubber in it at all.

How long does a latex pillow last?

Up to a decade, which makes it the longest-lived thing we make. Fiber pillows run two to five years. The organic cotton cover is the part that will show wear first, and it is washable.

Is the latex certified organic?

It is tested to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1, the strictest tier there is, the one written for products intended for infants, and it screens over a hundred harmful compounds including PFAS, formaldehyde, heavy metals and phthalates. We make no organic claim on the latex. The plant that produces it holds an organic latex certification but is not currently sourcing certified raw material, so putting that label on this pillow would be wrong.

How do you wash a latex pillow?

Wash the cover and keep the latex dry and out of the sun. Unzip the side, take the pieces out, machine wash the cover cool and hang it to dry, then refill. Direct sunlight and heat degrade latex, so do not tumble dry it and do not leave the pieces on a windowsill.

What loft should a latex pillow be?

Enough that your head sits level with your shoulders. Take pieces out through the side zipper to lower it, or add a refill bag to build it higher, which broad-shouldered side sleepers often want. Sleep three nights at a height before you change it again, and give the pillow a few weeks before deciding, because latex keeps settling past the first night.

Is latex good for hot sleepers?

Yes. Cutting the block into pieces leaves air channels running through the middle of the pillow, so heat travels out instead of collecting under your head, and none of that depends on a gel or a treatment that wears off. Buckwheat and wool are the two that beat it, buckwheat on raw coolness and wool on moisture.

Where does the latex come from?

Tapped from Hevea brasiliensis rubber trees in Sri Lanka through a shallow cut that leaves the tree growing, then poured, cut, and sewn into pillows by hand in our New Jersey workshop.

It holds you up, and it keeps doing it.

Set the height in the first few nights, then give it a few weeks. Sixty nights to be sure, handmade in our New Jersey workshop.
