USA-grown, pre-polished hulls

The pillow that still holds your neck in the morning.

Buckwheat hulls shift under your head until they find its shape, then wedge against each other and stay there. Your neck keeps the same line at hour eight that it had at hour one.

The short answer

Buckwheat is the firmest and steadiest pillow we make, which is why people with neck pain and people who sleep hot both end up here. The hulls flex, interlock, and hold, so your head stays level instead of settling lower through the night. Ours are pre-polished and air-jet cleaned, which makes them far quieter than the buckwheat pillow most people have tried once. If the firm feel is more than you want, the Buckwool Hybrid puts certified organic wool on the other side.

Feel
Firm at bedtime and still firm at six in the morning
Sound
A soft rustle, with movement noise cut up to 68% by pre-polishing
Temperature
3 to 5 degrees cooler at the surface than foam
Hulls
USA-grown, UV sterilized, cleaned without chemicals
Cover
Organic cotton with a side zipper
Lifespan
3 to 5 years, then refresh the hulls and keep the pillow

Three ways to sleep on buckwheat.

The full hull pillow for the firmest hold, the hybrid that gives you wool on the second side, and a bag of hulls for the pillow already on your bed.

Why the last one went flat

Foam feels supportive for about a minute.

Every foam and fiber pillow runs the same cycle. It holds at first, warms up, packs down, and by morning your head is lower than your shoulder and your neck has spent the night bent.

1

It feels perfect in the shop

You press it with your hand and it springs straight back. A hand is not a head, and a minute is not a night.

2

Your head warms the foam

Body heat softens foam. The surface that carried your weight at bedtime is softer an hour later.

3

You settle out of line

Your head drops below your shoulder. The neck holds a bend, and the muscles work all night instead of resting.

4

You wake up with a stiff neck

Morning stiffness reads like a bad mattress or a hard week. Often it is eight hours at the wrong angle.

Hulls do not soften when they warm. They move once, find your shape, lock against each other, and hold it until you move your head again.

Inside the pillow

Pre-polishing is why ours does not crackle.

A raw buckwheat hull is a rough pyramid with pointed edges, and those edges catch on each other every time you turn over. That catching is the sound people remember from the buckwheat pillow they tried once and sent back.

Ours go through a pre-polishing and air-jet cleaning process that breaks the pyramids into individual flat sides. The hulls slide past each other instead of snagging, and movement noise drops by up to 68 percent. What is left is a soft rustle like dry leaves, and most people stop hearing it inside a week.

How it holds your neck

The hulls lock, and that is what your neck feels.

Press your head into buckwheat and thousands of hulls move at once, then wedge against each other and stop. The pillow has taken the shape of your head and neck, and it holds that shape under weight for as long as you lie still.

This is the steady hold physical therapists tend to ask for when someone wakes with a stiff neck. Your head stays level with your spine, the muscles let go, and the first ten minutes of the morning feel different.

Make it yours

You set the height on the first night.

It arrives full, about a third more than most people keep, because it is easier to take some out than to wish you had more. Open the side zipper, scoop hulls into a bowl, and stop when your head sits level with your shoulders.

Side sleepers keep more, because the gap between ear and shoulder is wider. Back sleepers keep less. Sleep on a height for three nights before you change it again, and give the pillow a few weeks before you decide.

What separates our hulls from a cheap bag of buckwheat.

Buckwheat pillows look identical in a photograph. The difference is what happened to the hulls before they went in.

Your pillow is warm under your head by the small hours.

Buckwheat runs coolest of anything we make, because air moves through the gaps between the hulls all night. The surface never builds the warm hollow that makes you go looking for a different patch of pillow.

The ones we hear most.

Are buckwheat pillows noisy?

Less than you would expect from ours. A raw hull is a rough pyramid, and the pointed edges catch on each other, which is the crackle people remember. Ours are pre-polished into flat sides, which cuts movement noise by up to 68 percent. What is left is a soft rustle like dry leaves, and most people stop noticing it within a week.

Are buckwheat pillows good for neck pain?

They give the firm, steady hold that keeps your head level with your spine, which is usually what an aching neck needs. The hulls flex to your shape and then interlock, so your neck holds the same line at hour eight that it had at hour one. If firm is more than you want, the Buckwool Hybrid gives you that hold with certified organic wool on the other side.

How long does a buckwheat pillow last?

Three to five years, and then you refresh the hulls rather than replace the pillow. The cover outlasts the hulls by a wide margin, so a bag of fresh hulls through the side zipper gives you the pillow back.

Can you wash a buckwheat pillow?

Wash the cover, keep the hulls dry. Unzip the side, empty the hulls into a bowl or a spare pillowcase, machine wash the cover cool and hang it to dry, then pour the hulls back in. Water ruins hulls, so they never go in the machine.

Do buckwheat pillows get bugs or mold?

Ours are UV sterilized before they go in, and dry hulls hold no moisture for mold to work with. Keep the pillow out of damp and it stays clean. If it ever does get wet, spread the hulls in the sun for a few hours before they go back.

Are buckwheat pillows too firm?

They are the firmest pillow we make, and for most people who buy one that is the reason. Two things soften it. Take hulls out through the side zipper until your head sits level, and if you want a softer surface against your cheek, the Buckwool Hybrid keeps the buckwheat hold on one side and gives you organic wool on the other.

What loft should a buckwheat pillow be?

Enough height that your head sits level with your shoulders, and no more. Side sleepers keep more hulls because the gap from ear to shoulder is wider. Back sleepers keep less. Set it on the first night, sleep on that height three nights before you change it again, then give the pillow a few weeks before you judge it.

Are Circadian's buckwheat hulls organic?

The hulls are USA-grown and go in with no chemical treatment, cleaned by air jet and UV light, and the cover is organic cotton. Our finished-product organic certification covers the cotton and wool pillows rather than this one, so we describe the buckwheat pillow by exactly what is in it instead of borrowing a label that was issued for something else.

Do buckwheat pillows smell?

There is a faint toasted, grassy smell from the hulls in the first few days, closer to dry straw than anything chemical. It fades on its own. Nothing is added to create it and nothing is added to cover it.

Buckwheat or memory foam for side sleeping?

Buckwheat, if your shoulder is broad and your neck ends up bent. Foam feels supportive when you press it, then warms under your head and lets you settle lower across the night. Hulls do not soften when they warm, so the height you set at bedtime is the height you still have when the alarm goes.

Set it once, and it fits you for good.

Every Circadian pillow opens at the side so you can take the height down to yours. Sixty nights to be sure, and it is handmade in our New Jersey workshop.
