60-Night Trial

Kapok is softer and lighter than most pillows people have slept on, and the best place to judge it is your own bed. Sixty nights is enough to know whether the softness and the height suit you. If you find you want more support, send it back for a full refund, or look at the organic cotton pillow, which is firmer.

Circadian pillow, free shipping Free Shipping

Free shipping. Kapok is a pillow you judge in your own bed, so we cover the shipping and give you 60 nights to decide.

Wild-Harvested, Straight from the Pod

Kapok reaches your pillow without the chemical stage most pillow materials go through: no bleaching, softening or finishing. It grows soft inside a seed pod on a rainforest tree, so it never needed any of that. The pods ripen and fall on their own, people gather them by hand, and the fiber is separated from the seeds and cleaned before it goes into the pillow. That is why people with multiple chemical sensitivities, MCS, or reactive airways choose it.

You Set the Height

Kapok is lighter and airier than cotton, so a small amount changes how the pillow feels. To lower it, open the zipper on the short end just a little over a large bag and draw some kapok out, so the fiber stays in the bag and out of the air. Add some back the same way when you want more height.

Designed in DC · Handmade in New Jersey

Filled and sewn by hand in our New Jersey workshop. The fiber is weighed, distributed evenly, and sealed into the pillow by people who care about getting it right. We chose handmade because kapok's lightness makes it easy to over-fill or under-fill by machine. Human hands get the distribution right.

Naturally Hypoallergenic

Kapok fiber leaves dust mites and mold without what they need, and no pesticide or chemical finish is involved in getting it there. With an organic cotton cover around it, this pillow carries no bleach, softener or chemical finish.

Quick answers

Does kapok go flat over time?
Yes, kapok settles a little lower over months of nightly use, and a quick shake each morning brings most of the height back. Each kapok fiber is a hollow tube that is mostly air, so it rests as a soft cushion rather than a firm block. When it sits low, open the zipper a little and add kapok inside the cover so the fiber stays out of the room. Side sleepers who want a firmer pillow can step up to the Organic Wool Pillow.
Does a kapok pillow need to be fluffed?
Yes, more than cotton or latex. Kapok fiber is very light and can settle toward the edges or bottom of the pillow over time. A quick shake or gentle punch each morning redistributes the fiber and keeps the height even. This is similar to how you'd maintain a down pillow.
Can you be allergic to kapok?
Kapok allergies are rare, and the fiber is hypoallergenic. It carries a natural waxy coating that sheds water, and dust mites need damp air to live. Most pillow-related allergic reactions are triggered by processing chemicals, dust mites, or animal proteins, none of which are present in a kapok pillow. If you have an extremely rare kapok fiber allergy, you would likely know from exposure to kapok-filled products or tropical seed fibers.
Do you offer a sleep trial?
Circadian offers a 60-night sleep trial on every pillow, with no restocking fee. Sleep on it for up to 60 nights, and if it is not the right fit, return it for a full refund to your original payment method. The trial gives your body time to adapt to a natural material, which moves and feels differently from synthetic foam.

  • A hand lifting soft kapok inside a Circadian pillow

    Down-soft, grown on a tree

  • A woman resting on a Circadian kapok pillow on a made bed

    Hypoallergenic, with no feathers

Kapok is a plant, naturally hypoallergenic and vegan, so a down allergy has no feathers or dander here to react to. Each fiber carries a natural wax that sheds moisture, so the damp air dust mites need never settles in.

  • A handful of loose kapok fiber from a Circadian pillow

    Stays cool all night

Kapok is mostly air, so the heat from your head has little to soak into. It runs cooler than down or foam.

Kapok is the lightest natural fiber on Earth, and a pillow full of it feels like a cloud of down under your head. It is soft, it is airy, and there is not a feather in it.

Each strand of kapok is a hollow tube, closer to air than to anything solid. A handful weighs almost nothing and springs straight back open when you let go. A whole Standard pillow comes to about 2.3 pounds with its cover.

It stays cool as well. Air moves straight through the middle of every strand, so heat never builds up against your face, and there is no gel layer or coating to wear off after a season.

Feathers are what stop most people from buying a down pillow. Kapok gives you the same soft, collapsing feel and no feathers at all, so there is nothing in it for a feather allergy to find. The fiber also carries its own waxy coating, which sheds water rather than soaking it up, so it stays dry against your cheek. Dust mites need damp air, and they do not find it here.

Kapok grows inside seed pods on Ceiba pentandra trees in the Indonesian rainforest. The pods ripen, split and fall on their own, and people gather them off the forest floor by hand.

That is what wild-harvested means, and it is worth a minute. The tree is never cut down to reach the pods, and it keeps fruiting for decades.

It also means the fiber reaches you the way the plant made it. Kapok comes out of the pod white, clean and soft enough to sleep on. It skips the bleaching and chemical scouring a fiber usually goes through on its way to a pillow, so nothing is left in it to off-gas a few inches from your face. The usual soft pillow is either polyester, which is a plastic fiber spun in a factory, or down, which is feathers.

Kapok sleeps best as a mound rather than a flat pad. Give it a shake each morning and push the edges toward the middle, and it builds into a soft shape that holds your head. That shake is what keeps it full. It is the difference between a kapok pillow that lasts 3 to 5 years and one that goes flat early. If you want it lower, open the zipper on the short end just a little over a large bag and draw some kapok out, so the fiber stays in the bag and out of the air.

The cover is organic cotton. It is vegan, the kapok breaks down in soil at the end of its life, and it is made by hand in New Jersey.

Researchers have gone looking for the right pillow height and not found one. A 2021 review in Healthcare pulled together the studies on how height gets chosen and reported no optimum for back or side sleeping. It also found that the height which works for a person does not track the measurements of their head or their neck. So there is no number anyone can calculate for you, and a sealed pillow that arrives at one height has guessed.

Open the zipper. Take some out, sleep on it, put some back. Your neck answers the question that the measuring tape cannot. Ergonomic consideration in pillow height determinants and evaluation, Healthcare (Basel), 2021.

The longer version

Most pillows labeled 'down alternative' are polyester fiberfill. That is fine microplastic strands that shed over time and give off petroleum compounds. The few down alternatives that do use kapok often bleach it with chlorine to make it whiter, or chemically soften it to break apart matted clumps. Kapok does not need any of that. The fiber grows soft and hypoallergenic inside the seed pod. The pods shed seasonally and drop from the trees on their own, so workers collect them by hand without machinery. The pods are picked clean, the fiber is separated from the seeds, and it goes into the pillow. The cover is organic cotton.

How it works

A pillow you can adjust to fit you.

Most pillows come at one fixed height, so you sleep at a height that was never set for your body, and your neck and shoulders pay for it in the morning. Every Circadian pillow arrives full instead. You set the height on night one, take a little more out over the trial, and the pillow you've shaped is yours to keep.

The kapok pillow full and tall on a bed

Side sleepers

Full

Keep it full for the height a side sleeper needs, and give it a quick fluff in the morning to bring back its soft, cloud-like height.

Back sleepers

About three quarters

Take a little kapok out until your chin sits level. It is soft and cloud-like, so it cradles the back of your head.

Stomach sleepers

About half

Kapok is at its best here. Take out about half and it lies soft and low, so your head sits close to level with the mattress.

Inside the pillow

Wild-harvested kapok. The lightest natural fiber on earth.

Kapok is harvested from seed pods that are dropped from Ceiba pentandra trees in tropical rainforest regions. The pods shed seasonally, so there is no machinery required to harvest them.

  • Feel

Light and cloud-like, close to down.

Your head sinks in softly, the way it does into down, because each fiber is a hollow tube that is 80 to 90 percent air.

  • Cool

    Stays cool and fresh.

The fiber is mostly air, so there is little for your heat to soak into. A natural waxy coat sheds liquid water, which is why kapok resists mold without any treatment.

  • Clean

    Unbleached and unsoftened.

The pods ripen and fall on their own. The fiber is picked clean by hand and reaches your pillow with no chemical finish on it to off-gas.

More about the material

Each fiber is a hollow microtube, 80 to 90 percent air by volume, with a wall thickness of one to two microns.

Your head rests on the lightest natural fiber on Earth. It stays soft all night. Almost no work is required to turn the raw material into bedding fiber. The pods are manually picked clean, spun, and sent to us. The hollow structure is why kapok is the lightest natural fiber on earth and why it feels like high-quality down. The cell wall has a natural waxy coating that repels liquid water, which is why kapok resists mold and mildew without any chemical treatment. The fiber breaks easily at the touch into looser strands, so a quick fluff returns the pillow to full height. The fiber reaches your pillow unbleached and unsoftened, with no chemical finish on it to off-gas.

Obsessed with this pillow

Obsessed with this pillow. It is the softest pillow Iv ever slept on and there was more than enough kapok inside to nearly make another standard pillow. I love how soft the cotton cover is and especially love that each piece is hand made! Highly recommend and worth every penny!

Two months in and still my favorite pillow

I’ve been sleeping on this kapok pillow every night for a couple of months now and it still feels as soft and fluffy as day one. A quick shake in the morning and it pops right back up into a cloud.

I live in Florida and run hot, and this pillow stays cool all night. No flipping it over to find the cold side!

It’s also my go-to answer when someone asks me what natural pillow to start with. If you’re on the fence, this is the one. 💚

I'm using the travel pillow as a lumbar support

I'm using the travel pillow as a lumbar support on the couch (covered with a decorative pillowcase). It keeps my lower back aligned while I'm sitting. I respect the mission of the Circadian company and like to support a company that is cruelty-free, using materials that are sustainably harvested and supports communities.

Replaced a 12 year old down pillow

I ordered this pillow to replace my very old (but beloved) down pillow and I’m so glad I did. It is heavenly! It feels so good to support such an intentional company. I advise you to heed the recommendation given by the quiz. I ordered cotton initially despite the quiz giving me kapok as a result….the quiz was right.

THE best pillows I ever had!

THE best pillows I ever had! I was looking for an organic down feather alternative and the kapok- filled pillow is actually better! Kapok is a completely natural product, stuffed inside an organic cotton cover.

It’s firm enough to support my neck while being soft and moldable at the same time. And I like how the pillows are sent fully stuffed so you have the option of removing some of the filling to customize it to your exact liking.

Oh, and the Customer Service couldn’t be any better!!

Finally, a pillow I actually love!

I’ve tried A LOT of pillows looking for the right balance of soft, comfortable, supportive, and natural, and this one is a winner.

The kapok fill is incredibly soft and fluffy without feeling like memory foam or one of those overly firm “supportive” pillows. I love that you can remove some of the fill and adjust the loft, because apparently my neck has opinions about pillow height. 😂

It’s also lightweight and breathable, which I really appreciate as someone who tends to sleep hot. The organic cotton cover feels great, and I love knowing the pillow is filled with natural kapok rather than synthetic materials.

The biggest surprise for me was how much I like the feel of kapok. It has that soft, almost down-like fluffiness without using down. I’ve been really impressed with it and would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a natural, non-toxic pillow that’s actually comfortable.

Definitely chemical sensitivity friendly

I have pretty bad chemical sensitivity (housebound most of the time - asthma and tachycardia in most public locations or other people’s houses). I try to only buy totally safe, non-toxic products. I found this pillow to be very safe and non-toxic, and the packaging was fragrance free which is always a huge plus.

The default amount of stuffing was too firm for me but it does allow adjusting. There was some fiber dust when I changed the amount of filling, but that fiber dust seemed totally nontoxic to me and didn’t give me a chemical sensitivity reaction.

Love it!

I Love my new pillow! The last pillow I used was embarassingly old. I'm not always up for change just for change sake I guess. :) But it was time. I did my research and landed on Circadian and am so glad I did. First, there's the customer service, and Jacob, a definite 5 star! The product I decided on was the Wild-Harvested Kapok Pillow in the travel size. Now I use this as my every-night pillow. After a few days I did remove a bit of the fill, not because it was uncomfortable, but just to see how it felt. I will recommend this company and this particular pillow to anyone looking for a great company (Great Customer contact), and a great product (No use of chemicals) Thanks Circadian!!

Should have started with kapok

I got the buckwheat pillow last year and loved how cool it was but I never really got used to how firm it is. My sister got a kapok one a few months ago and let me try hers. Totally different. Same quality, still cool, but so much softer. I got my own and the buckwheat lives in the guest room now for anyone who likes firm. Should have started with the kapok.

Bought the Circadian buckwheat pillow last year and loved how cool it slept, but I never fully adjusted to the firmness. My sister got a kapok one a few months ago and let me try hers. Different planet. Same brand quality, same coolness, but the kapok is so much softer it's not even comparable. Switched mine over and the buckwheat now lives in the guest room for visitors who want that feel. Should have started with the kapok.

Good for people who move around

I move around a lot at night, side, back, sometimes stomach. The kapok goes wherever I land instead of keeping me in one spot. My brother has a buckwheat pillow and it's too stiff for how I sleep. This is the right one for me.

Fixed my neck at 71

I'm 71 and my doctor said to try a soft pillow I could shape. The first night it was too tall, but the zipper made it easy to take a handful out. After that it's been exactly right. Being able to fix the height myself without buying a whole new pillow is what I needed. My neck stopped hurting in the second week and it hasn't come back.

Adjustable pillow that solves my neck problem at 71

I'm 71. My doctor said try a soft pillow you can shape. The first night I had too much fill and it was too tall, but the zipper made it easy to take a handful out. After that adjustment, the pillow has been exactly right. The fact that I can fix the height myself, at my age, without buying a whole new pillow, is what I needed. Finally works for stomach sleeping

Stomach sleeper, late thirties, and my neck has been getting worse for years. Most pillows are too tall and twist my head sideways. I pulled out about a third of the kapok through the zipper and now it's the perfect height. Being able to adjust it is the whole reason it works for me.

Love how it's made

I bought this partly because of how the kapok is gathered. The pods drop off wild trees on their own and people collect them by hand, no chemical processing. I didn't want to sleep on petroleum or something with a sketchy supply chain. The pillow turning out to be the softest one I've ever had was a bonus.

Pillow is great. The zipper, less so.

I love the pillow itself. Soft, light, no chemical smell, exactly what I wanted in a natural down alternative. 3 stars instead of 5 because the zipper got stuck on the kapok the first time I tried to take some fill out. The fibers got caught in the teeth and it took me about ten minutes to get it unstuck without ripping the fabric. Once it was open I was fine, but now I'm nervous about opening and closing it again. Worth knowing if you plan to adjust it a lot. I'm keeping it because it really is comfortable.

Soft and light, just fluff it

Soft, light, no smell, and no sneezing like feathers used to give me. The one thing to know is kapok is so light you have to fluff it more than a regular pillow. The first few days I thought that would get annoying but after a week it's just part of making the bed. Worth it for a pillow this comfortable that doesn't have me reaching for allergy meds.

Common questions

Does kapok go flat over time?

Yes, kapok settles a little lower over months of nightly use, and a quick shake each morning brings most of the height back. Each kapok fiber is a hollow tube that is mostly air, so it rests as a soft cushion rather than a firm block. When it sits low, open the zipper a little and add kapok inside the cover so the fiber stays out of the room. Side sleepers who want a firmer pillow can step up to the Organic Wool Pillow.

What kind of sleeper is a kapok pillow best for?

Kapok is best for back sleepers and stomach sleepers who prefer a soft, low-to-medium height pillow. Side sleepers can use it with extra kapok for more height, but if you need firm cervical support, buckwheat or cotton may suit you better. Kapok is especially well-suited for anyone with chemical sensitivities, feather allergies, or anyone seeking a plant-based alternative to down.

How much does a kapok pillow weigh?

The Wild-Harvested Kapok Standard weighs about 2.3 pounds with its cover on, the lightest pillow we make. The organic cotton Standard is about 3.3 pounds and the buckwheat about 10. Kapok's lightness is part of its down-like feel.

How does the kapok pillow compare to a down pillow?

Kapok feels a lot like down. It is soft, light and fluffy, and it shapes gently around your head. The fiber is collected by hand from the fallen seed pods of ceiba trees, and the trees are never cut down. It is roughly 80 to 90 percent air. There are no feathers, so no feather allergies. Because the fiber sheds moisture and is low in protein, it is a common choice for people avoiding dust mites.

Is a kapok pillow good for people with chemical sensitivities or MCS?

Yes. Kapok is one of the best pillow options for people with multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS), because no synthetic chemicals are used at any stage of production. The fiber goes from the seed pod to your pillow without bleaching, chemical softening, or synthetic treatment.

How long do kapok pillows last?

A kapok pillow lasts 3 to 5 years before it needs a refill. Kapok compresses more slowly than cotton but faster than buckwheat or latex, and daily fluffing keeps it full. Circadian sells kapok refill bags so you can top it up through the zippered cover instead of replacing the pillow.

What is a kapok pillow made of?

A kapok pillow is filled with natural fiber harvested from the seed pods of the kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra), which grows in tropical rainforests. The fiber is silky, lightweight, and soft, similar in feel to down. Circadian's kapok pillow pairs this wild-harvested kapok with an organic cotton cover.

Is kapok organic?

Our kapok is wild-harvested, and it carries no organic certification. The pods ripen and fall on their own, and people gather them by hand. The fiber is separated from the seeds and cleaned. It is never bleached or chemically treated, so what sits under your head is the fiber the pod grew. The cover that wraps it is organic cotton.

How do you clean a kapok pillow?

Remove the organic cotton cover and wash it in cold water with gentle detergent, then let it air dry. The kapok itself should not be machine washed or submerged in water, as this will damage the fiber's structure. If the kapok needs freshening, air it in indirect sunlight for a few hours. Because the fiber sheds water, it stays fresher than most fills.

Is kapok sustainable?

Yes. The pods are gathered and the tree is left standing, fruiting for decades. The fiber breaks down in soil, and so few steps sit between the pod and the pillow that there is little to process.

I'm buying it as a gift. When does the 60-night trial start?

The 60 nights start on December 25 for gift orders placed November 1 to December 24, 2026, not on the day the box arrives. That way the person who opens it on Christmas morning gets the whole trial. Tick "This is a gift" in the cart before you check out, and their last trial night is February 22, 2027. If it is not right, email jacob@circadianrest.com and we will set up the return.
