The block is shredded into irregular pieces rather than left solid, which does two things. Air moves continuously between the pieces, so the surface stays cool without a gel layer or a cooling treatment. And you can add or remove pieces through the zipper, which a solid latex pillow will never let you do.

The sap goes into the mold pure and is poured slowly, so the air settles out and the density stays even top to bottom. That is what makes it spring back for years instead of matting down. It is tapped through a shallow cut in the bark that opens the vessel network without harming the tree, and the same tree keeps producing for decades.

Where it came from

The tree it came from is still standing.

Latex is sap. It is drawn through a shallow cut in the bark of a Hevea brasiliensis rubber tree in Sri Lanka, which does not harm the tree.

  1. Tapped for twenty-five to thirty years

    Tapping starts around year six or seven and the same tree is drawn from for decades. When it finally stops producing, the timber goes into furniture and flooring as rubberwood, valued for being a by-product rather than a purpose-felled hardwood.

  2. Why it has pinholes

    Latex cannot conduct heat. In the Dunlop mould, several hundred metal rods reach into the cavity so the middle of the block cures at the same rate as the outside. Without them the core would stay raw. The ventilation you can feel is a side effect of how the material has to be baked, which is a better story than the marketing one.

  3. Poured slowly, in small batches

    In a long continuous mould the denser rubber settles as the slab travels, so it finishes firmer at one end. Ours cures evenly top to bottom, which is why every shredded piece has the same density.

Make it yours

Add pieces or take them out until your neck sits level.

Latex is the easiest of our fills to adjust, because the pieces are large and they do not cling to each other.

  1. Open the side zipper.

    Work it fully open so you can reach the middle of the pillow.

  2. Take out a handful of pieces.

    They come out cleanly. Pull from the centre so the pillow keeps its shape.

  3. Sleep on it before you judge.

    Lie down the way you sleep and check that your neck is level with your spine.

  4. Add pieces back if you went too far.

    Keep what you removed in a sealed bag away from light.

  5. Shake it out weekly.

    A quick shake redistributes the pieces and keeps the surface even.

How much you keep depends on how you sleep.

Latex is the easiest of our fills to adjust, because the pieces are large and they do not cling to each other.

Spine alignment · Tree-Tapped Latex

Three sleepers, three pillow heights.

Your spine stays neutral when the pillow fills the gap between head and mattress. That gap is different for back, side, and stomach sleepers.

Three sleep positions side by side. Stomach sleeper with a very low pillow, back sleeper with a medium pillow, side sleeper with a tall pillow. In each, a soft gold line traces the spine in a neutral position.
Best for Back & side

Latex is best for back and side sleepers because the Dunlop latex pieces give firm, steady support that holds its height under your head. Stomach sleepers can take pieces out through the side zipper, but the pieces never compress flat. If you sleep face-down, kapok or cotton lays lower.

Stomach

A high pillow tips your head back and overextends your neck. Most stomach sleepers want a very low pillow, or none.

Remove most of the fill so your head and shoulders sit close to level with the mattress.

Back

Supports the natural curve of your neck so your chin sits level and the small space behind your neck is filled in.

Remove fill a handful at a time until your head sits level with your shoulders.

Side

Fills the gap between shoulder and ear so your spine runs in a single horizontal line from skull to hip.

Keep most of the fill until your ear, shoulder, and hip stack along one straight line.

You need height to fill the shoulder gap, and latex holds that height better than any of our fiber fills because it pushes back rather than compressing.

Back · middle ground

Take out a handful

Enough lift to support the neck without pushing your chin down. Pull pieces from the centre so the pillow stays even across its width.

Stomach · take a lot out

Leave a shallow layer

Latex is springy, so a full one will feel high on your stomach. Take out more than you expect and shake the rest flat.

Keep it for years

Keep it out of the sun.

Everyday

Sunlight is the one real enemy

Ultraviolet light breaks latex down over time, so store and air it in the shade rather than on a sunny windowsill.

Every few months

Spot clean only

Sponge the cover with cool water and air dry. Do not machine wash or soak the latex.

Once a year

Top it up as it settles

Add a handful of pieces through the zipper. Refills are the same slow-poured latex.

Slow-poured latex springs back for years instead of matting, and a well-kept pillow lasts up to a decade. Top up the fill through the zipper as it settles.

A few last questions

The ones we hear most.

No, and we would rather lose the sale than get this one wrong. A latex allergy is a hard stop, and we would rather say so plainly. Cotton, kapok or wool are the pillows to look at instead, and we will help you swap it.

A solid piece cannot be adjusted and cannot breathe. Shredding gives you the airflow and the ability to set your own height, which is why every one of our latex pillows is made this way.
