    Buckwheat vs Memory Foam

Buckwheat, the fill in Circadian's Buckwheat Pillow, is the better choice for hot sleepers, people with neck pain, and anyone who wants adjustable height and long-term value. If you want total silence or a soft, cradling feel, our Tree-Tapped Latex Pillow is silent, hugs your neck and springs back as you move. The core tradeoff is structural cooling and adjustability versus quiet simplicity.

This guide is for: For anyone choosing between a buckwheat pillow and a memory foam pillow and wanting an honest, research-backed breakdown of how they compare on support, temperature, chemical safety, noise, and cost.
    Key Takeaways
    • Buckwheat pillows sleep cooler because air flows through the gaps between individual hulls, a structural effect that 5 peer-reviewed studies link to better slow-wave and REM sleep. Memory foam's dense cell structure traps heat and the body does not adapt even after 5 nights of exposure.
    • The hulls in a buckwheat pillow last 3 to 5 years, and refreshing them through the zipper keeps the same pillow going after that. A typical memory foam or foam pillow replaced every 2-3 years costs $15-30+ per year.
    • Memory foam emits VOCs including toluene and acetone at peak levels on day one, with long-term half-lives of about 24 days. Buckwheat hulls have zero chemical treatment from sourcing through cleaning.

The Bottom Line: Buckwheat vs Memory Foam

Buckwheat pillows are the stronger choice for hot sleepers, people with neck or back pain, combination sleepers who shift positions, and anyone who wants to customize height. If you stay in one position, want a quiet pillow or love a soft cradle, our Tree-Tapped Latex Pillow is silent and gives that hug without foam's heat.

The deciding factor for most people is temperature. Buckwheat hulls create thousands of structural air channels that dissipate heat all night long. Memory foam, even gel-infused versions, retains body heat because the dense foam cell structure has nowhere for heat to go.

    What Is a Buckwheat Pillow?

A buckwheat pillow is filled with buckwheat hulls, the light outer shell left behind when the grain is milled for food. The hulls shape to your head and neck, giving firm, adjustable support with natural airflow. Most brands roast their hulls, which leaves them as three-sided pyramids with sharp edges, and that is the crunch the category is known for. Ours are pre-polished and air-jet cleaned under a patented process that breaks them into single-sided polished pieces, so they are softer against your face and up to 68 percent quieter.

The mechanics work like this: individual hulls interlock when you press your head in, shift to match your skull and shoulder curve, then lock in position and hold it for the rest of the night. Unlike foam, they do not slowly compress under your head over eight hours. Air moves between every hull continuously, and heat passes through the gaps rather than building up - structural cooling with no treatments involved.

Buckwheat pillows in this category are sold by several established makers, including Hullo, Beans72, PineTales, ComfyComfy, and Circadian. Build quality varies: Circadian's $149 version uses USA-grown, pre-polished hulls air-cleaned with a proprietary jet-propulsion method to remove fine particles and reduce rustling sound. Other reputable makers use unpolished or partially polished hulls at lower price points. Most ship with a zippered organic cotton cover and arrive full so you can remove fill until the height matches your sleep position.

Hands open the zipper of a Circadian Buckwheat Pillow to show the buckwheat hulls inside.

What Is a Memory Foam Pillow?

A memory foam pillow is made from viscoelastic polyurethane foam that responds to heat and pressure by slowly conforming to the shape of your head and neck. The material was developed from NASA research in the 1960s and entered the consumer market in the 1990s.

When you press into memory foam, the cells compress and hold that impression until the pressure and heat change, then the foam slowly rebounds. This creates a cradle effect that many single-position sleepers find comfortable. The slow rebound is both the appeal and the limitation: it wraps around your head but takes time to adjust when you change positions.

Gel-infused and open-cell memory foam variants are designed to reduce heat retention. They perform better than traditional dense memory foam, but independent research consistently shows memory foam running warmer than natural-fill pillows.

Where 20 buckwheat brands say their material comes from

We read the published pages of 20 buckwheat pillow brands between February and May 2026, ours included, and recorded two separate things: where the material was grown, and where the pillow was put together. 12 of the 20 say the pillow is made in the United States, and 4 publish nothing about where the material itself comes from. How we checked. A desk study. Every cell is the brand's own published wording, read on its own product page between February and May 2026, with no figure inferred and nothing taken from a review site or a marketplace listing. Where a brand publishes no figure the cell reads not published, and that counts as a finding, because a buyer reading that page cannot know it either. Our own row is graded by the same rule as every other. Prices and policies move, so the price columns are the capture-window figures and not a live quote. The disclosure counts are what this study is about and they move far more slowly.

    Support and Spinal Alignment

Buckwheat: Hulls interlock and hold position. A 2021 systematic review in Clinical Biomechanics confirmed that cervical spine alignment is much affected by pillow shape and height, not material alone. A 2021 ergonomic review in Healthcare Basel concluded that the optimal height for back and side sleeping "cannot yet be identified," and a 2025 study found side-sleeping height tracks your own shoulder width. Different positions and different shoulders need different heights, which means a fixed-height pillow cannot be optimal for everyone. Buckwheat fill lets you set the exact height for how you sleep.

Memory foam: Conforms through heat and pressure, creating a deep cradle. A randomized comparative study published in the Tohoku Journal of Experimental Medicine comparing feather, memory foam, and orthopedic pillows found that memory foam scored much lower on cervical curve support than the orthopedic design (p < 0.001) and had the highest temperature increase of all tested pillows.

Winner: Circadian's Buckwheat Pillow, especially for combination sleepers and anyone with neck or back pain. The hulls hold your head in neutral position all night rather than compressing gradually underneath it. Most adjustable buckwheat pillows - including Hullo, Beans72, PineTales, and Circadian's $149 version - arrive full so side sleepers keep more fill for height and back sleepers remove a cup or two for a flatter profile.

    Temperature and Sleep Quality

Temperature is where the difference between buckwheat and memory foam is clearest, and the science behind it matters more than most people realize.

Why heat disrupts sleep: A peer-reviewed study in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology established that heat exposure increases wakefulness and decreases both slow-wave sleep (SWS) and REM sleep - and the body does not adapt to elevated sleep surface temperature even after five consecutive nights. A study in Frontiers in Neuroscience confirmed that sleep onset occurs most reliably during the steepest decline in core body temperature. That optimal skin microclimates for sleep are 31-35 degrees C.

Memory foam's heat problem: A randomized comparative study published in the Tohoku Journal of Experimental Medicine (2014) found that memory foam produced much higher temperature increases than other pillow types tested. The dense cell structure retains heat against your face and neck throughout the night. Gel-infused and open-cell variants mitigate this but do not eliminate it.

Buckwheat's structural cooling: Air circulates between individual buckwheat hulls continuously. The cooling is mechanical: gaps between hulls let heat escape rather than build up. No gel coating, no phase-change material, and no cooling treatment. Across natural fill categories - wool, kapok, latex, cotton, buckwheat - buckwheat consistently ranks coolest in published material comparisons, including those from the Sleep Foundation.

For readers who have confirmed memory foam is too hot, 6 Alternatives to Memory Foam Pillows for Hot Sleepers covers the full range of fill types by temperature performance.

    Adjustability and Customization

Buckwheat: The fill is fully adjustable through a zippered opening. Remove hulls to lower the height, add them back when the pillow compresses over time. The ergonomic pillow height study found no firm conclusions about the optimal height for back or side sleeping, which is exactly why adjustability is clinically relevant. Side sleepers tend to keep more fill for higher height. Back sleepers usually remove a cup or two for a flatter profile.

Memory foam: Solid memory foam pillows come in a fixed shape and cannot be adjusted. Shredded memory foam offers limited adjustability, but compresses faster than natural fills. Contoured memory foam is shaped for one or two positions and cannot be changed.

Winner: Buckwheat by a wide margin. One buckwheat pillow can serve a side sleeper who shifts to back sleeping after an injury, or a couple who need different heights. Adjustable buckwheat pillows from Hullo, Beans72, PineTales, and Circadian ($149 Standard) usually arrive with more fill than most people keep. The first adjustment can happen the first night.

Customer review - 5 stars: What I like about this buckwheat pillow is the set-it-where-you-want-it feel. The fill does not compress like down, so once I adjusted the height, it stayed consistent night to night. I removed a decent amount of hulls (mostly a back sleeper) and now it sits at the right height.

    Chemical Safety and Off-Gassing

Memory foam VOC emissions: A 2022 study published in Chemosphere measured VOC emissions from memory foam mattresses and found confirmed emissions of 2-propanol, acetone, chloromethane, and toluene. Emissions peaked on day one and decayed over 31 days, with short-term half-lives of 4-12 hours and long-term half-lives of about 24 days. The study noted that VOC concentrations were below established health-based benchmarks in their test conditions - an important qualifier. The US EPA reports indoor VOC concentrations are 2-5 times higher than outdoor levels, and bedrooms with limited overnight airflow concentrate these levels further.

Buckwheat's zero-chemical profile: Buckwheat hulls contain no synthetic compounds by nature. Cleaning methods vary by maker: roasted-hull processing (common in budget imports) and air-jet methods (used by Circadian and a few specialty makers) both avoid chemical treatments. Look for makers that specify their cleaning method on the label - no pesticide residue, no fragrance, no flame retardant, and no VOC-producing polymer. Untreated organic cotton twill covers are the norm in this category.

Certification context: OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Class 1 tests textiles against more than 1,000 harmful substances. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) requires minimum 70% organic fiber content and covers the entire supply chain through third-party certification. These frameworks exist because material safety cannot be assumed without independent checking.

Winner: Circadian's Buckwheat Pillow for chemical safety, especially for sleepers with chemical sensitivities, young children, or concerns about long-term VOC exposure during sleep.

    Noise, Weight, and Adjustment Period

This is the section where buckwheat's honest trade-offs belong.

Noise: Buckwheat hulls rustle when you shift positions. Most people stop noticing it within 3-7 nights. A minority of people never fully tune out the sound and in the end prefer a silent pillow. Pre-polished hull treatments (used by Circadian and a few specialty makers) make a measurable difference. "Cleaning and reshaping the hulls cuts the movement noise by up to sixty-eight percent compared with raw, unprocessed hulls, which is the single biggest reason people stick with the pillow past the first week," says Circadian's founder and resident pillow expert. For a deeper look at how hull processing affects sound, Why We Designed a Quieter Buckwheat Pillow covers the full engineering story. Memory foam is completely silent.

Weight: A Standard buckwheat pillow weighs about 10 lbs. Memory foam pillows in the same size usually weigh 2-4 lbs. The weight difference is noticeable when repositioning in bed and makes buckwheat a poor travel choice. Several makers (Hullo, ComfyComfy, Circadian) offer lighter Travel sizes around 16" x 19".

Adjustment period: Buckwheat needs 3-7 nights for most people. The feel is unfamiliar at first: firm and structured, different from the soft or slow-sinking feel most sleepers are used to. Memory foam has virtually no adjustment period, which is a genuine advantage if you need comfort from night one.

Summary: If noise is your main concern, pick a silent natural pillow: our Organic Wool, Wild-Harvested Kapok, Organic Cotton and Tree-Tapped Latex pillows make no sound, and our pre-polished hulls are up to 68 percent quieter than standard hulls. If you can tolerate a short adjustment period, the long-term payoff of buckwheat on cooling, support, and durability is substantial.

    Lifespan and Cost Per Year

Buckwheat lifespan: The Sleep Foundation counts buckwheat among the most durable pillow types. With proper care, a load of hulls lasts 3 to 5 years. Worn hulls can be replaced through the zipper rather than discarding the entire pillow. Several makers - Beans72, Hullo, and Circadian - sell bulk refill hulls for exactly this purpose.

Memory foam lifespan: Memory foam pillows usually last 2-3 years before losing resilience. The foam compresses permanently with repeated use and cannot be refreshed or refilled.

Cost per year comparison: Quality adjustable buckwheat pillows fall in the $59 to $159 range (Beans72 ~$59-99, Hullo ~$87-159, PineTales ~$75-129, Circadian $149) - and because you pour in fresh hulls every 3 to 5 years instead of replacing the whole pillow, you pay that price once. A $30 polyester or foam pillow replaced every 1-2 years runs $15-30 per year. A $60 memory foam pillow replaced every 2-3 years runs $20-30 per year. Over the long run, buckwheat trades a new foam pillow every 2-3 years for a hull refill every 3 to 5 years.

    Choose Buckwheat If...

Choose Circadian's Buckwheat Pillow when your needs match one or more of these specific profiles:

    • You sleep hot. Heat exposure measurably reduces slow-wave and REM sleep, and the body does not adapt to elevated sleep surface temperature over time. Buckwheat's structural airflow is the most effective passive cooling mechanism available in a pillow fill.
    • You are a side sleeper who needs high-height firm support. Side sleepers need the most pillow height of any position to bridge the gap between shoulder and ear. Buckwheat holds that height all night without compressing. Every Circadian pillow arrives full, so side sleepers set the exact height through the zipper.
    • You have neck or back pain. Buckwheat hulls interlock and hold your head in neutral cervical alignment for the entire night, rather than gradually compressing. People with herniated discs, cervical issues, and chronic morning stiffness often report improvements that orthopedic foam pillows did not deliver.
    • You want maximum adjustability. One buckwheat pillow can be configured for different sleep positions, different people, and different phases of your sleep life. No other fill type offers this range.
    • You are concerned about VOC exposure. Memory foam off-gasses measurable VOCs including toluene and acetone for weeks after first use. Buckwheat hulls have zero chemical treatment from field to pillow.
    • You want long-term value. You refresh the hulls every 3 to 5 years instead of replacing the whole pillow, so the pillow itself stays in use.

For a comprehensive look at buckwheat's advantages, 9 Buckwheat Pillow Benefits Worth Knowing Before You Buy covers the full picture. If you want both buckwheat firm support and a softer fallback in one pillow, dual-fill hybrid formats are a niche category - Circadian's Buckwool Hybrid ($199 Standard) is one of the more readily available options, combining buckwheat and wool with an internal divider.

Still Like Memory Foam? Try This Instead

If you like what memory foam does, one of our natural pillows does it without the heat:

    • You need absolute silence. If rustling keeps you up, our Organic Wool, Wild-Harvested Kapok, Organic Cotton and Tree-Tapped Latex pillows are silent. Want buckwheat support too? The Buckwool Hybrid has a silent wool side you can flip to.
    • You maintain one sleep position all night. Memory foam needs time to conform before you move. Our Tree-Tapped Latex Pillow cushions your head with a buoyant lift and springs back the moment you move, so it holds you whether you stay put or turn.
    • You prefer a soft, slow-responding cradle sensation. For a soft cradle without foam, our Tree-Tapped Latex Pillow holds your neck like a soft hug, and our Organic Wool Pillow gives a springy, cushioned feel that stays full.
    • You stay cool naturally. If heat is not a problem for you, memory foam still has a fixed shape and gives off VOCs for weeks after first use. Our natural pillows adjust at the zipper and have no foam to off-gas.
    • You want comfort from night one with no adjustment. Memory foam needs no adjustment period, while buckwheat needs 3-7 nights, and every Circadian pillow comes with a 60-night trial to cover that stretch.

If you are considering switching from memory foam to natural materials, a shredded natural latex pillow is often the recommended transition point. Shredded natural latex provides a bouncy, responsive feel similar to memory foam but without synthetic polymers or VOC-emitting compounds. Circadian's Tree-Tapped Latex Pillow ($169, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Class 1 certified slow-pour Dunlop with an organic cotton cover). Adjustment period is shorter than buckwheat (2-5 nights vs. 3-7).

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is a buckwheat pillow better than memory foam for neck pain?

For most neck pain sufferers, yes. Buckwheat hulls interlock and hold the head in neutral cervical alignment all night without gradually compressing the way foam does. Adjustable buckwheat height also lets you set the exact pillow height recommended for your sleep position.

Do buckwheat pillows sleep cooler than memory foam?

Yes, much. Air circulates continuously between individual buckwheat hulls, dissipating heat throughout the night through structural airflow - not a surface treatment. Memory foam traps heat because the dense cell structure has nowhere for heat to escape, and research confirms the body does not adapt to elevated sleep surface temperature even after five nights.

How long does a buckwheat pillow last compared to memory foam?

Buckwheat hulls last 3 to 5 years with proper care, while memory foam pillows usually last 2-3 years before permanently losing resilience. Buckwheat hulls gradually flatten but can be refreshed by adding new hulls through the zipper - Beans72, Hullo, and Circadian all sell bulk refill hulls for this purpose.

Is memory foam toxic to sleep on?

Memory foam emits VOCs including 2-propanol, acetone, chloromethane, and toluene, with peak emissions on day one and long-term half-lives of about 24 days, according to a 2022 study in Chemosphere.

WELL MADE AS PROMISED. Took a little while to get it but was worth the wait.

I am extremely grateful for the customer service I received. I live in Ontario, and my pillows were initially brought to my door with an unexpected additional delivery charge, which I politely declined. And in a very short time, I was proactively contacted by Jacob at Circadian who immediately sorted the situation, at no cost to me. And in a few short days, my pillows arrived. And I am sleeping well. Thank you, Jacob!

Would get it. 5 nights in and a cervical curve and upright neck appears like a magic trick! Head tilting to right now centered. Sternomastacloid muscle hurting and pulling head stopped.

The buckwheat pillow is just simply amazing.

3 years of PT nothing changed in my neck and spine.

Unable to sleep night after night. Tossing and turning in pain. I have had a dozen or more pillows recommended over 3 years. Didn't work at all.

Now 5 nights in 7 peaceful hours of sleep. Dreaming, REM sleep. Only change was Jacob's pillow. Thank you Jacob!

Finally, a pillow I actually love!

I’ve tried A LOT of pillows looking for the right balance of soft, comfortable, supportive, and natural, and this one is a winner.

The kapok fill is incredibly soft and fluffy without feeling like memory foam or one of those overly firm “supportive” pillows. I love that you can remove some of the fill and adjust the loft, because apparently my neck has opinions about pillow height. 😂

It’s also lightweight and breathable, which I really appreciate as someone who tends to sleep hot. The organic cotton cover feels great, and I love knowing the pillow is filled with natural kapok rather than synthetic materials.

The biggest surprise for me was how much I like the feel of kapok. It has that soft, almost down-like fluffiness without using down. I’ve been really impressed with it and would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a natural, non-toxic pillow that’s actually comfortable.

I ended up getting two because I wanted to try a couple different types of natural fibers to see what I like best. I ended up with the wool and buckwool pillows and love them both. I honestly can't really decide which I like better. Shipping was pretty quick and customizing the pillow was simple. I appreciate the emails with tips on how to do that. Thanks!
