Turn the cover inside out, reach in to its far corners, grab the duvet's two top corners through the cloth, then flip the cover down over the duvet and shake it out. If the cover has ties and the insert has loops, tie the top two before you flip. A duvet shifts when the cover is bigger than the insert, when nothing anchors the corners, or when the fabric is slick.
- The inside-out method is four moves and works alone on any bed. Use the burrito roll for a heavy duvet or a King cover.
- The Circadian Organic Cotton Duvet Cover measures 72 by 90 inches in Twin, 92 by 96 in Queen and 96 by 110 in King. It closes with a zipper along one side.

Step 1: Turn the cover inside out and find its corners.
How do you put on a duvet cover? Turn it inside out first. The rest is four moves you can do alone. Most people fight it because they start right side out and then hunt for the corners by feel. The corners are where the job is won.
Two methods get searched more than any other. In the inside-out reach, you reach in to the cover's far corners, pick up the duvet's top corners through the cloth, and lift. In the burrito roll, you roll cover and duvet together from the head end, fold the mouth back over each end, and unroll.
The reach is easy with a Twin and a stretch with a King at 96 by 110 inches. The burrito never leaves the mattress, so it wins when the duvet is heavy. This guide follows the reach. It puts your hands on the corners when any ties need tying.
Lay the cover on the bed inside out, opening at the foot, then lay the duvet on top edge to edge. Any corner loops should land at the cover's corners, and you can see at once whether the two are the same size.
Rebekah makes the bed with her organic comforter and climbs back in with a book.

Step 2: Tie the duvet's loops to the cover's ties if it has them.
What are the ties for on a duvet cover? They hold the corners of the duvet to the corners of the cover, so the two move as one when you turn over. A duvet inside a cover is two layers of cloth sliding against each other. The inner layer lags every time you pull the covers up, and by morning the duvet sits bunched at the foot. Ties stop that drift at the corners.
Why do duvets have loops? A loop is the other half of the tie. A cover built with ties carries a short length of tape sewn into each inside corner. You pass it through the loop and tie a bow. Circadian's Organic Cotton Duvet and Organic Wool Duvet both carry corner loops.
So the step splits in two. If your cover has ties, tie the top two corners now, while your arms are still inside and the duvet corner is under your hand. Leave the bottom two for after the flip. If your cover has no ties, go straight to the flip and let sizing and fabric do the holding.
Brooklinen and Parachute publish twill ties in all four corners of their sateen covers, Boll & Branch four interior corner ties, and Coyuchi inside ties on its percale cover.
Pick a duvet with corner loops if:
- You are replacing a polyester comforter and want the same weight in a fiber that stays cool
- You want the insert and the cover from the same maker, so the sizes were cut to match

Step 3: Flip the cover down over the duvet and shake it to the corners.
How do you put on a duvet cover by yourself? The flip is the move that makes it a one-person job. Hold a cover corner and a duvet corner together in each hand, stand at the head of the bed, and lift both hands to shoulder height. The cover falls over the duvet and turns right side out. Two or three shakes send the cloth to the foot.
If the top corners are too much to hold, put the duvet down and switch to the burrito roll.
Finish at the bottom corners. If the cover has ties, reach in at the foot, find the two bottom loops and tie them. Hold the cover by its bottom corners and shake once toward the head, so the top corners seat. Then run your hands along both long edges to feel for a fold.
On a Twin at 72 by 90 inches this takes less effort than making the bed. On a King at 96 by 110, the width beats most people's reach. Hold the corners closer to the center line and let the shake do the spreading.
Step 4: Close the zipper and put that edge at the foot of the bed.
Where does the zipper go on a duvet cover? Away from your face. The edge that carries the closure goes at the foot of the bed or down the far side.
Which closure is best on a duvet cover? A zipper closes the full opening in one pull, so the duvet cannot work its way out at the foot. Buttons are done up one at a time, and the gaps between them are where a corner of the insert escapes. The Circadian Organic Cotton Duvet Cover closes with a zipper along one side.

Method note: this table is built from two captures, and every cell is the maker's own published wording. The closure, tie, fabric, certification and origin columns come from each maker's cover page, checked 6 and 7 September 2026. The dimensions column comes from a second capture of the same makers' Queen bedding pages on 14 September 2026, so the inches there are sheet inches unless the row says cover. None of the nine covers was tested in hand. "Not published" means the page did not say, which is a finding in itself, because a buyer reading that page cannot know it either.
Two of the counts in that table sit next to no statement of ply, and a count means little without one. The FTC told the National Textile Association in a 2005 advisory opinion that a yarn counts once however many plies are twisted into it, and that the honest form is "300 thread count, two-ply yarn." Avocado is the one row that states its ply.
The blanks are not an accident of these nine pages. Federal textile labeling rules, set out in the FTC's guide to the Textile and Wool Acts, require a label to carry the fiber content, the country of origin and the firm behind the product. They ask for nothing about the closure or the finished inches. A maker who prints those is choosing to.
The fabric column matters more than the closure column, because the cover is the layer against you all night if you skip a top sheet. Both faces of the Circadian cover are the same 300 count sateen, and many covers put a presentable weave on top and something cheaper underneath. A sateen float also snags more easily than a plain weave, so keep rings and rough heels off any sateen cover.

Step 5: Fix the reason the duvet shifts before the first night.
Why does the duvet shift inside the cover? Four causes account for nearly every case. The cover is much bigger than the insert. Nothing holds the corners, because the cover has no ties, the insert has no loops, or nobody tied them. The cover fabric is slick. Or the insert is a different shape, a square European duvet in a rectangular American cover.
Size explains three of the other four.
Lay the empty cover flat and lay the insert on it. If the cover has more than a hand's width to spare along any edge, the insert has that much room to move. Ties will hold the corners while the middle sags into a hammock.
How do you keep the duvet from shifting when the cover has no ties? You add an anchor. Twill tape sewn into the inside corner seams gives you ties in four short seams. Duvet clips grip the corner of the insert through the cover from outside, and they need no sewing. Either works on an insert with no loops.
Cotton grips cotton, and two slick faces slide.
Fabric is the cause people miss. A polyester microfiber cover on a polyester-shelled insert is two slick faces against each other, and every turn sends one across the other. The sateen on the Circadian cover has a four-over-one float, and the inside face is the same sateen, so it grips a cotton shell the way two cotton sheets grip. A 2022 study in the Journal of Natural Fibers found that a satin weave passes more air and water vapor than a plain weave in the same cotton. That answers the worry people bring to sateen, that it will sleep warm.

Duvet Insert vs Comforter: What Is the Difference?A duvet is the insert that goes inside a cover and a comforter is finished on the outside. This guide explains which one you have.
The cover should match the insert to within a few inches.
What size duvet cover do you need, and should a duvet cover be bigger than the insert? Buy from a maker who publishes the dimensions, and check the cover is the insert's size or a little larger in each direction. A couple of inches wraps the duvet's height and still lies flat. A foot bigger is the shifting problem from Step 5.
The Circadian Organic Cotton Duvet Cover measures 72 by 90 inches in Twin, 92 by 96 in Queen and 96 by 110 in King. Read the label on your own insert first, because the size name is a starting point and the inches are the answer.
Why are duvet covers bigger than the duvet? A filled duvet has height, and a flat envelope has to wrap it. The trouble starts when a cover is cut loose enough to take the next size of insert too.
Size names are not a standard across makers.
Two covers both called Queen can differ by inches, which is why people ask why duvet covers never fit. The comparison worth making is the inches in the table above against the label on your insert. The duvet covers collection lists the Circadian dimensions by size, and the bedding collection has the duvets they were cut for.
The workshop also cuts and sews bedding for beds no standard size fits, so a cover that has to be 88 by 92 inches is a size we can make. Write in with the finished dimensions you want, or the insert's.
Most duvet cover mistakes happen in the first thirty seconds.
What goes wrong when people put on a duvet cover? Starting right side out is the biggest. The duvet goes in through the opening, the corners never meet, and the job ends with someone inside the cover on their knees.
Leaving the ties for last is next. Once the duvet is inside and the cover is right side out, the corners are the hardest place to reach, so a cover that came with four anchors gets used with none.
Buying by size name comes third. Two Queens from different makers can differ by inches.
Putting the closure at the head of the bed is the small one people live with for years. You notice the zipper pull under your chin every night and never think to fix it. Turning the cover takes one move.
Washing with the zipper open damages the cover, since the teeth catch the sateen of whatever shares the drum. Close it first. While the cover is off, shake the duvet out and let it air. How to Wash a Wool or Cotton Duvet at Home covers how often.
When a hidden zipper, a wool duvet or the wrong size changes the method.
A hidden zipper needs a hand run along the flap.
When does this advice change? Three cases move it. The first is a hidden zipper, which sits under a flap of cloth so nothing shows outside. Run a hand along the closing edge to find the pull, open it fully before you start, and run the same hand along the flap afterward to check it closed to the end. Boll & Branch publishes a hidden zipper on its cover.
The second is a wool duvet. The Circadian Organic Wool Duvet is hand-tufted with corner loops, the same as the cotton one. Wool is spot cleaned and sunned, never machine washed or dry cleaned, so the cover comes off far more often than the insert is cleaned. Use all four ties if your cover has them, because a wool duvet that drifts bunches its warmth into half the bed.
The third is the wrong size insert, usually a King insert in a Queen cover. No method makes it fit. The insert folds under itself along one edge and the cover closes with a fight or not at all. The reverse closes easily and then swims. If your insert is a King, buy the King cover at 96 by 110.

Three sleepers with one complaint land on three different fixes.
What do these decisions look like in practice? Three people say the duvet will not stay put. Each gets a different answer.
Scenario 1: the duvet at the foot of the bed every morning. A couple bought by size name, and the cover has a hand's width to spare on every edge. It has ties, and the insert has no loops. Duvet clips will hold the insert they own, but it will still travel within the spare inches. The Circadian Organic Cotton Duvet Cover in Queen at 92 by 96 was cut for a standard Queen insert.
Scenario 2: the cover that takes twenty minutes and two people. A person living alone has a King duvet and dreads changing it, so the cover gets changed less often than the sheets. The problem is the method. A King at 96 by 110 is wider than a reach, so roll instead.
Scenario 3: the polyester cover that slides. A hot sleeper bought a microfiber cover for its smooth feel and finds the duvet slides every night. Two slick synthetic faces cause the sliding, and the fiber causes the warmth. A cotton sateen cover grips a cotton-shelled insert, and the 2022 weave study above found satin passes more air than a plain weave.
A pattern Circadian sees in customer conversations
People write in asking for finished dimensions before they order, not after. One recent letter came from someone who owns a wool duvet and needed a cover at 88 by 92 inches, a size no standard label carries. Another started as a question about a flat sheet and ended as a cut-to-measure order.
The cover to buy, and the duvet to put inside it.
Which duvet cover should you choose? Buy one cut to your insert's published dimensions, with a closure that stays closed and lands at the foot, in a cotton whose inside face you would sleep against. Put it on inside out, corners first, and it is four moves you can do alone.
The Circadian Organic Cotton Duvet Cover is cut and sewn in New Jersey to 72 by 90, 92 by 96 and 96 by 110 inches. It is the same 300 count long-staple sateen on both faces, in the cotton's own color, with neither bleach nor brighteners in it. It carries Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification under license GOTS-10229, issued by Oregon Tilth. Ask me for the certificate and I will send it, and the certifications page explains what it covers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where does the zipper go on a duvet cover?
The zipper goes at the foot of the bed or down the far side, away from your face and hands. A cover that closes along one side, like the Circadian Organic Cotton Duvet Cover, is laid with the zipper on the edge you do not sleep against.
Should a duvet cover be bigger than the insert?
A duvet cover should be the insert's size or a couple of inches larger in each direction, enough to wrap the duvet's height and lie flat. A cover much bigger leaves room for the duvet to travel and bunch. The Circadian cover measures 72 by 90 in Twin, 92 by 96 in Queen and 96 by 110 in King.
What are the ties for on a duvet cover?
On covers that have them, the ties hold the corners of the duvet to the corners of the cover, so the two move together when you turn over. Each tie passes through a loop sewn to the duvet's corner. Circadian's duvets are hand-tufted with corner loops, and Boll & Branch, Brooklinen and Parachute publish ties in all four corners of their covers.
How do you put on a duvet cover by yourself?
Turn the cover inside out, lay the duvet on the bed, reach in to the cover's far corners, and grab the duvet's two top corners through the cloth. If the cover has ties, tie the top two now. Lift, and the cover falls down over the duvet right side out. Shake it to the corners and close it. For a heavy duvet or a King cover, roll the two together from the head end instead.
Can you use a duvet cover without ties?
You can use a duvet cover without ties. It holds the duvet still as long as the cover is cut close to the insert's size and both are cotton. The duvet moves when the cover is much larger or the fabrics are slick. If it still drifts, sew twill tape into the inside corner seams, or use duvet clips that grip the corners from outside.
Do duvet covers go over comforters?
A duvet cover goes over a comforter as long as the two are the same size. A comforter is finished on the outside and a duvet is meant to live in a cover, but the cover treats them the same. Check the comforter's label first, and if it has no corner loops, duvet clips will hold them.
Read the inches on your insert, then buy the cover cut to them, in a sateen that is the same cloth on the face against your skin.
