An adjustable pillow exists because nobody can pick their height from a product page. There is no correct pillow height. It depends on the gap between your mattress and your ear, and that gap is your shoulder width, your position and how far you sink in.

So the maker ships it full and hands you the decision. That is the right design, and Savvy Rest arrived at it independently, which is worth respect.

Adjusting a pillow is a skill people learn by getting it wrong. Most first-timers stop taking material out far too early, because a pillow that is still too high goes on feeling like a pillow while the neck quietly stays bent. You usually need two or three goes over a couple of weeks before the height is properly yours.

A policy that takes nothing back asks you to learn that skill with no safety net.

What 19 wool brands charge, and what you can work out from it

We read the published pages of 19 wool pillow brands between February and May 2026, ours included. Every one prints a price. 9 of the 19 publish enough to work out what you are paying per pound of material. The rest print a number with nothing behind it.

How we checked. A desk study. Every cell is the brand's own published wording, read on its own product page between February and May 2026, with no figure inferred and nothing taken from a review site or a marketplace listing. Where a brand publishes no figure the cell reads not published, and that counts as a finding, because a buyer reading that page cannot know it either. Our own row is graded by the same rule as every other. Prices and policies move, so the price columns are the capture-window figures and not a live quote. The disclosure counts are what this study is about and they move far more slowly. Cost per night divides the published price by a fixed lifespan applied equally to every brand, so the column compares brands rather than predicting your pillow.

What Savvy Rest builds and how it sells it

A 23-year-old organic mattress maker in Charlottesville, Virginia, founded in 2003, employee-owned since 2012 and a certified B Corporation. They sew and fill four loose-fill pillows locally in Virginia: kapok, wool, a wool-latex blend and shredded latex, each with an inner case you open. Sofas, platform beds and pet beds take up much of the catalog. One flagship showroom, a factory in Crozet, and dealers across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

They let you touch things before you commit. Mini pillows, material samples, a dealer map, and staff who will talk to you. For a category sold almost entirely on photographs, that matters, and it partly answers the returns problem: try a mini first.

Two things to weigh.

Certification scope. Their GOTS scope certificate, linked from their certifications page, lists their wool and kapok pillows as finished products at the Organic grade. On the shredded latex pillow it covers the cotton case, not the latex. The product pages show the GOTS logo without spelling out which of those applies.

No buckwheat and no cotton pillow. If hulls are what you want, they have no answer.

Their review counts are small, three to twenty-one per loose-fill pillow, which is what a business of their size with a dealer network looks like rather than a warning sign.

What we do differently, and what it costs us

Our pillows ship the same way: about a third fuller than most people keep them, with a side zipper so you can take wool, cotton, kapok, hulls or latex out until your head sits level with your shoulders.

On certification we say exactly what is covered. Our organic cotton and organic wool pillows carry the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) over the material inside as well as the cover, under license GOTS-10229, and we will send you the certificate if you ask. On buckwheat, kapok, latex and the hybrid we make no such claim; the cover on those is organic cotton and that is all we say.

Who should buy which

Savvy Rest's strength is the showroom. If you live near a dealer, you can handle the materials first, and their mini pillows and sample packs show you the feel. A mini cannot show you your height, though, and they take no pillow back.

Buy ours if you are buying unseen, which is most people. Sixty nights with the postage paid does the job their samples do, on the actual pillow, at full size.

How to get the height right, whichever you choose

A pillow has one job. Keep your ear, your shoulder and your hip in a straight line while you sleep. Side sleeping leaves the biggest gap to fill, so it wants the most height. Sleeping on your back needs much less, just enough to fill the hollow behind your neck so your chin stays off your chest. Face down needs almost none.

Take out more than feels right. Sleep three nights at that height before changing it again, and give the pillow a few weeks before deciding it is not for you.
