Why Our Hulls Are Different

Most buckwheat pillows use raw, angular hulls straight from the mill. They work, but they can sound crunchy and feel a bit sharp.

We start with USA-grown buckwheat hulls and run them through a multi-step polishing and cleaning process. This smooths rough edges and removes loose particles using mechanical, chemical-free processing.

The result is a fill that:

  • Moves smoothly
  • Rustles less
  • Settles into an even surface

You still get that “buckwheat” structure and precision, just with quieter, smoother movement.

Discover Buckwheat Pillows

Buckwheat pillows feel different from the soft, squashy pillows most of us grew up with. They are heavier, more structured, and much more precise.

Thousands of small hulls shift around the shape of your head and neck, then hold that shape until you move. Instead of slowly sinking through foam during the night, you get clear, predictable support.

Because there are open spaces between the hulls, air can move freely through the pillow. Heat escapes, moisture dries out, and the pillow surface tends to stay closer to room temperature, especially helpful if you usually sleep hot.

Organic Cotton Twill Case

Heavy-duty organic cotton twill from Texas. Strong enough to hold 10 pounds of hulls without tearing, soft enough against your face. You get natural materials against your skin and a cover that’s built to last years.

Machine washable (remove hulls first - lay them in the sun to refresh).

Firm & Adjustable

This is a firm pillow by design. Buckwheat hulls do not compress like foam or down, they shift and mold instead. That is what gives you such defined support.

The space beneath your neck is filled, keeping your spine straight while your muscles fully relax.

With the zipper, you control the height and firmness:

  • Remove hulls = lower and slightly softer
  • Add hulls = higher and firmer

Side sleepers usually keep it full. Back sleepers remove some. Stomach sleepers remove quite a bit.

We ship each pillow generously stuffed, giving you complete control.

Cool & Dry Breathability

The spaces between thousands of hulls create natural air channels that let heat and moisture escape. Paired with a breathable organic cotton twill cover, the pillow:

  • Feels cooler to the touch when you first lie down
  • Lets warm air move away instead of building up
  • Dries out quickly after a humid night

If you often flip your pillow to “the cool side,” a buckwheat pillow is usually a big improvement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Circadian Buckwheat Pillow organic?

The cotton twill cover is organic. The buckwheat hulls aren't, but they're grown in the USA without pesticides and never roasted. Buckwheat rarely gets organic certification.

If you need fully organic, check out our wool or cotton pillows.

Can I buy extra buckwheat hulls or refill my pillow?

Yes. We sell extra hulls in bags from 5 lb to 200 lb so you can top up or fully refill your pillow. Many customers remove hulls to adjust the height at first, then add fresh hulls after a few years to restore fullness.

Shop extra hulls.

How long does a buckwheat pillow last?

With normal use, buckwheat hulls typically last 10–15 years before they slowly break down and the pillow feels flatter.

You can refresh the feel by adding fresh hulls every 3–5 years; the cotton cover usually lasts even longer.

Where is the pillow made?

Every Circadian Buckwheat Pillow is cut, sewn, and filled in New Jersey using USA-grown buckwheat hulls and Texan organic cotton twill.

Collapsible content

Is a buckwheat pillow noisy?

Buckwheat hulls naturally make a soft rustling sound when you move. Our pre-polished hulls move more smoothly and rustle less than typical raw hulls. Most people stop noticing the sound after a few nights; extremely noise-sensitive sleepers may prefer our wool or cotton pillows.

Is this pillow good for neck pain?

Many customers find that the firm, moldable support of a buckwheat pillow helps relieve neck and shoulder tension. When you adjust the loft correctly, it keeps your head and neck in a more neutral position all night.

For best results, follow our step-by-step adjustment guide.

Can I wash the buckwheat pillow?

You can wash the organic cotton cover, but never wash the hulls. To clean, unzip the pillow, pour the hulls into a dry container, then machine-wash the cover on cold and line dry. Let the hulls air out in the sun before refilling the pillow.

What sizes does the Circadian Buckwheat Pillow come in?

We offer Travel, Standard, Queen, and King. All sizes are fully adjustable; choose based on your bed size and how much surface area you like.
