What wool does at night, and why it costs more

Most people buy a wool pillow for the wrong reason, which is that it sounds natural. The reason it works is specific and worth understanding, because it is also what you are paying for.

Wool keeps you one temperature all night. Warm damp air is what makes a pillow feel hot against your face. Wool pulls that damp out of the air and holds it inside the fiber, up to 30 percent of its own weight, then lets it go again. The heat leaves with it. What is left against your cheek is dry air, and dry air is what feels cool. On polyester or foam that warm damp air stays trapped between your face and the pillow, which is the hot four-in-the-morning feeling that wakes people without fully waking them.

It handles heat in both directions. Wool gives off a little heat as it takes up moisture and absorbs heat as it releases it, so it works against whichever way your temperature is drifting. A cooling gel does one of those things, for about twenty minutes, until it has matched your body.

Dust mites need humidity above roughly half to survive. The air at your face stays too dry for them to settle in.

Lanolin left on new wool is a sign the fiber was scoured gently rather than stripped or bleached.

What 19 wool brands say was done to the material

We read the published pages of 19 wool pillow brands between February and May 2026, ours included, and recorded what each one says about processing and about the cloth around the fill. 19 of 19 describe the processing at all. What a brand does not print is the part a buyer cannot check, and processing is where the difference between two pillows of the same material usually sits.

How we checked. A desk study. Every cell is the brand's own published wording, read on its own product page between February and May 2026, with no figure inferred and nothing taken from a review site or a marketplace listing. Where a brand publishes no figure the cell reads not published, and that counts as a finding, because a buyer reading that page cannot know it either. Our own row is graded by the same rule as every other. Prices and policies move, so the price columns are the capture-window figures and not a live quote. The disclosure counts are what this study is about and they move far more slowly.

What Holy Lamb makes and how long it takes

A wool bedding maker in Oakville, Washington, hand-making pillows, comforters, toppers and mattresses in a 1902 general store. Its founder led the company for its first 18 years. What is in ours, and where the wool sits

The wool never touches your face. It sits behind the organic cotton shell, so what your cheek rests on for eight hours is cotton. That answers the question everyone has about wool, which is whether it will scratch.

Wool comes out in whole layers, not loose pinches of fiber. Inside the cover it is often one long blanket of wool folded back and forth like a quilt put away in a drawer, so what you see through the zipper is a folded edge rather than a loose sheet. Work from the outside: slide your fingers under the topmost layer nearest the opening and lift it away from the rest. If it stays joined, follow it to the nearest fold and open it there. Keep what comes out flat and dry, and put it back any night you want the height again.

The first week with any wool pillow

Lift a whole layer of wool out from the outside, opening it at a fold, until your ear sits over your shoulder with your head level. Sleep three nights at that height before you change it again.

Air the pillow in the sun for a few hours if you like. Wash the cover and leave the wool alone.
