Best Natural Pillow for Pregnancy

Pregnant woman with Circadian Wild-Harvested Kapok Pillow — non-toxic natural pillow for pregnancy

The reason to buy a natural pillow during pregnancy isn't comfort. It's what isn't in it. Most pillows pick up flame retardants, anti-microbial sprays, formaldehyde-based fabric softeners, and synthetic dyes during processing. The residues continue off-gassing for months. A pregnant sleeper breathing those particulates for 8 hours a night is the part most pillow brands don't talk about.

Three Circadian pillows are appropriate for pregnancy, plus the Body Pillow variant of the Kapok pillow for side-sleeping support.

Wild-Harvested Kapok Pillow (Body Pillow size available)

The most reactive-skin-safe option. Kapok pods drop from tropical trees seasonally and are manually picked clean, then spun and sent to our New Jersey workshop. The supply chain has zero chemical processing because the steps that introduce residues (bleaching, flame retardant, anti-microbial spray) do not exist for kapok. The cover is organic cotton. Soft, lofty, similar feel to down without any animal product. The 20" x 72" Body Pillow variant gives the full-body support most second and third trimester sleepers need.

Organic Cotton Pillow

GOTS Certified Organic through the entire supply chain under license GOTS-10229. Fill, cover, thread, and dye process all included. Dense, durable, holds shape for years. The bestseller in our lineup, partly because it's the easiest transition pillow for first-time natural sleepers.

Organic Wool Pillow

For pregnant sleepers dealing with night sweats and temperature fluctuations. Wool wicks up to 30 percent of its weight in moisture while staying dry. GOTS Certified Organic end to end under license GOTS-10229. New wool carries a faint lanolin scent for 3 to 7 days that clears completely. If the scent is a concern in the first trimester, start with kapok or cotton.

What we recommend against during pregnancy

The tree-tapped latex pillow is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and clean for most sensitivities, but the mild rubber scent during the first week can trigger nausea in early pregnancy. The Buckwheat and Buckwool Hybrid pillows are fine materially but run heavy (8 to 10 pounds) which makes them harder to reposition during the night.

60-night sleep trial. Free returns both ways. Handmade at our New Jersey workshop, which has been producing certified natural bedding since 1981.

Common questions

Is kapok safe during pregnancy?

Yes. Kapok is plant fiber from the seed pods of the Ceiba pentandra tree. There is no chemical processing, no synthetic additive, and no animal product. It's the cleanest fill on the market for pregnant sleepers with reactive airways.

Should I get a Body Pillow or a regular pillow for pregnancy?

By the third trimester, most side sleepers benefit from a Body Pillow to support the bump, separate the knees, and reduce hip strain. A regular pillow stays at the head. Many pregnant sleepers use both.

Are natural pillows non-toxic?

The certification to look for is GOTS for cotton and wool (license GOTS-10229 covers our certified pillows) and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for non-cotton fills. Together those cover the most common volatile organic compounds (VOCs), flame retardants, and chemical residues found in conventional bedding.
