Cooling gel runs out of cool in about twenty minutes.
A gel pad feels cold because it soaks up your heat. Once it reaches your temperature it has nowhere to put the rest. You spend the rest of the night on a warm surface.
Cooling gel
Cold to the touch when you lie down. Within fifteen to twenty minutes it has warmed to match you, and it stays there.
Memory foam
It sinks slowly around your head and holds the heat in. By morning you are lying in a warm crater.
Cooling pillowcases
A slick fabric feels cool on first contact. It warms up on the same fifteen to twenty minute clock as the gel.
Wool keeps working after you fall asleep, so the pillow is as comfortable at the end of the night as it was at the start.
How wool keeps you cool
Wool keeps heat from building up at your face.
Hot sleepers wake up because heat builds at the pillow and has nowhere to go. Wool gives it somewhere to go.
As you warm up, the fiber draws moisture off your skin and holds it inside, up to 30 percent of its own weight. The heat leaves with it. The side of the pillow under your face stays one temperature, and you stay asleep.
Wool works in winter too. It gives off a little warmth as it takes up moisture, so the same pillow does not feel cold in January.
The wool comes from certified organic farms in New Zealand. The whole pillow is GOTS Certified Organic, the Global Organic Textile Standard, under license GOTS-10229 through Oregon Tilth.
Four ways to sleep cool
Four pillows that stay cool. Pick the feel you like.
Each one keeps heat from building up in its own way. What changes is how it feels under your head, from soft and springy to firm.
Organic Wool Pillow
Soft and springy, medium support.
SofterFirmer
The wool gives under your head and springs back, and it stays full instead of packing down. The wool moves moisture away from your skin all night, so the surface stays one temperature from lights out to morning.
Buckwheat is the coolest pillow we make. Air moves between thousands of USA-grown hulls all night, so warm air rises out instead of building up. The hulls lock into the shape you push them into and hold your neck there until morning.
Love the hulls but want a softer side for some nights? The Buckwool Hybrid Pillow has buckwheat on one side and organic wool on the other.
Tree-Tapped Latex Pillow
A soft, bouncy hug.
SofterFirmer
The latex pieces lift your head and spring back every time you move. Air travels through the pieces, so it stays cool with no gel at all. The latex is tested to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 at Class 1, the tier written for baby products.
Two chambers in one cover. One side is cool, firm buckwheat that holds your neck in place. Flip it over and the other side is soft, silent organic wool. Most people lean on one side and keep the other for the nights they want it.

GOTS Certified Organic
Audits the fiber farm, the scouring, the mill and the workshop. On the Organic Cotton and Organic Wool pillows and both duvets, the fill and the cover are certified, not just the cover.

Strictest tier, finished material
OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Class 1
An accredited lab tests the finished material against more than 100 harmful substances, including PFAS, formaldehyde, heavy metals and pesticide residue, at the threshold used for products made for direct contact with infants.
The Forest Stewardship Council audits the plantations the latex is tapped from against criteria for ecosystem protection, worker safety and land rights. OEKO-TEX tests the finished latex; FSC covers where it came from.

From the founder
Every pillow I tried either flattened in three months or hid a list of chemicals you'd need a glossary to read, so we built one that doesn't do either.
Jacob, founder of Circadian
Your wool pillow is sewn by hand in a GOTS certified workshop in New Jersey that has made pillows since 1981.
A few last questions
Before you decide.
What is the best pillow for night sweats?
A wool pillow is one of the best. It works on the moisture your skin gives off, taking it into the fiber, up to 30 percent of its own weight. The heat leaves with it. You may still sweat, but the pillow under your face stays one temperature.
Which pillow do you make that runs coolest?
Buckwheat. Air moves between the hulls all night, so heat never builds up. It is also the firmest pillow we make. If you want the hulls with a softer side to turn to, the Buckwool Hybrid Pillow has buckwheat on one side and organic wool on the other.
Is a wool pillow scratchy?
The cover is organic cotton sateen, the smoothest weave cotton makes, and it is what your cheek rests on all night.
Can I change the height?
Yes. It arrives full, about a third more than most people keep. Open the zipper and lift the top fold of wool away from the outside, opening it at the nearest crease. Never reach into the middle or tear it. Set it aside. Lay it back in any time. Sleep on a height for a few nights before you change it again.
What if it isn't right for me?
Sleep on it for 60 nights. If it isn't your pillow, send it back for a full refund. Most orders arrive in 5 to 10 business days.
