How Do You Stop Fitted Sheets from Slipping Off?

A fitted sheet slips off when its pocket is shallower than the mattress plus any topper. Measure the bed with the topper on, then choose a pocket that clears that height. If the sheet still lifts, add sheet straps for tension and a non-slip mat for grip.

This guide is for: For anyone whose fitted sheet lifts at the corners overnight, especially on a deep mattress, a bed with a topper, or a smooth mattress cover.
    Key Takeaways
    • Most contemporary mattresses measure 10 to 15 inches thick before a topper adds more, so measure the full stack and choose a pocket that clears it.
    • Work through 5 fixes in order, starting with pocket depth, then orientation, sheet straps, and a non-slip mat, with Velcro or safety pins as the last resort.
    • The Circadian Organic Cotton Fitted Sheet has a 15 inch pocket that clears a deep mattress, or a standard mattress with a topper on it.

Does Pocket Depth Fix a Fitted Sheet That Keeps Coming Off?

Pocket depth fixes most slipping. Sleep Foundation says sheets whose pockets are too shallow will pop off the mattress. Depth only works when it clears the whole bed, mattress and topper together. When the pocket already fits and the corners still lift, look at friction, tension, and how the sheet fits after washing.

Three rules decide your next move.

    • If you have not measured yet, strip the bed, leave any mattress pad or topper in place, and measure from the bottom of the mattress to the top of the highest layer. An older Sleep Foundation sizing guide gives the same advice: count the topper in the measurement.
    • If the pocket is shallower than that total, the elastic pulls the corners up each time you shift. Choose a deeper pocket.
    • If the pocket clears the total and the sheet still lifts, check friction, sheet orientation, and fit after washing.

Take the measurement at the corner where the sheet slips, since toppers and pads can sit unevenly. Write the number down and keep it handy when you shop. A pocket that only just clears the stack leaves the elastic stretched tight, and a sheet under that much tension tends to creep upward as you move. Sleep Foundation describes deep pocket sheets as having elasticated corners meant to keep the sheet in place on a thick mattress, which only helps when the depth matches the bed.

Pocket depth labels vary by brand and publication. One Sleep Foundation guide to deep pocket sheets treats a deep pocket as one that reaches up to 15 inches. Another Sleep Foundation guide puts deep pockets at 17 to 20 inches. Whether you shop Brooklinen, Parachute, or Coyuchi, read the depth printed on the product page, ignore the word deep on its own, and compare the number to the bed you measured.

Why Does a Fitted Sheet Keep Coming Off the Mattress Corners at Night?

Your movement tugs the elastic all night, and the corners lift when the pocket is shallow, the mattress cover is smooth, or something new sits on the bed. A fitted sheet that stayed put on a bare mattress often lets go once a topper goes on top.

Five triggers account for most lifted corners, and each one has a next step.

    • You added a topper or mattress pad. The extra height uses up pocket depth. Re-measure the whole stack and check it against the sheet.
    • You moved to a thicker mattress. Sleep Foundation's mattress construction guide puts most contemporary mattresses between 10 and 15 inches thick, so a thick bed can leave a sheet with little pocket to spare.
    • The mattress cover is slick. An older Sleep Foundation guide to toppers that slide notes that smooth covers lack friction, so toppers and sheets slide more easily. Add grip with a non-slip mat.
    • The sheet changed in the wash. Cotton can shrink, which is why the Circadian flat sheet is cut generously so it still tucks after it shrinks. Recheck the fit after laundering.
    • The sheet is turned the wrong way. A sheet laid with its short side at the foot of the bed can pull the head corners loose.

Notice where the sheet lets go. Foot corners that lift first can point to a pocket that is too short or a sheet turned the wrong way. A sheet that slides sideways along with the topper points to friction, and the fix there is grip.

How Can You Stop a Bottom Fitted Sheet From Coming Off the Bed?

Match the pocket depth first, then add tension or friction. Check the sheet's size and orientation, clip sheet straps to the corners, slide a non-slip mat between the mattress and topper, and keep Velcro or large safety pins for last. Start with the fix that addresses the cause.

Work down the ladder from the top.

    1. Fit the pocket. Measure the bed with the topper on and choose a pocket that clears it.
    2. Check size and orientation. Match the sheet to your bed size, and put the short side at the head.
    3. Add sheet straps. They attach to the corners of a fitted sheet and pull it tight, per the Sleep Foundation topper guide.
    4. Add a non-slip mat. A textured mat between the mattress and topper gives the sheet and topper something to grip.
    5. Use Velcro or large safety pins. The same guide lists both. Keep them for a bed where the other four fixes were not enough.

Straps, mats, and pins supplement a pocket that clears the bed.

What DIY tricks help keep bed sheets tight?

Tuck the head corners under first, then stretch the sheet over the foot corners so the tension runs along the length of the bed. Rug grippers cut to size under each corner and a textured layer beneath the sheet add friction. These are practical tips rather than tested fixes, and none of them rescues a pocket that is too shallow for the bed.

How do you re-fit a sheet that has already slipped?

Pull the sheet off completely instead of tugging one corner back on. Lay it over the head corners first, check that the short side sits at the head, then stretch it down to the foot corners. Smooth the surface by hand so no slack gathers in the middle, because slack gives the elastic room to pull a corner loose when you turn over.

Do sheet straps work better than a deeper pocket?

They do different jobs. A deeper pocket removes the cause of the pull, while straps add tension to a sheet that is already the right depth. If the sheet is too shallow for the bed, straps tend to strain the corners instead of solving the fit, so settle the depth before you add them.

What Type of Fitted Sheet Is Least Likely to Slip Off the Mattress?

A fitted sheet with a pocket that clears the mattress and topper, and corners that stay snug, is least likely to slip. Deep pocket names a size category, so the depth listed on the product page tells you more than the label does.

Labels such as the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) cover how cotton is grown and processed and say nothing about fit or pocket depth.

Most fitted sheets are cut for a bare mattress and then fight the owner at the corners the moment anything goes on top. The Circadian Organic Cotton Fitted Sheet is a strong fit for deep mattresses and mattress toppers. It has a 15 inch pocket and stays on over a topper, and it is sold on its own as well as inside the Circadian Organic Cotton Sheet Set. That pocket clears a deep mattress, or a standard mattress with a topper on it.

On a product page, look for the pocket depth as a number in inches, whether the sheet was written with a topper in mind, and whether the piece can be bought alone, which lets you replace the sheet that wore out without replacing the whole bed. The fitted sheet here is sold alone and in the set for that reason, and bedding comes with a 60 day return window from delivery.

The cotton itself is 300 thread count long-staple sateen, and our guide to thread count and weave explains what that number means. Brooklinen, Parachute, Coyuchi, and Boll & Branch also sell fitted sheets, so compare the pocket depth listed on each product page against your own measurement.

What Do Most People Get Wrong About Keeping a Fitted Sheet On?

Most people treat slipping as an elastic problem, but pocket depth, friction, and fit after washing all play a part. Three beliefs cause the most wasted money, and each has a simple correction you can check against your own bed with a tape measure and a look at the label.

Myth: Tighter elastic alone fixes it.

Reality: Elastic helps, but a pocket that is too shallow still pulls the corners up. Friction from a smooth cover and a fit that changed in the wash also contribute, so more than one fix is often needed. A shopper who swaps in tighter elastic on a shallow pocket often ends up with the same lifted corner and a harder sheet to put on.

Myth: A deep pocket means the same depth everywhere.

Reality: Sleep Foundation's own pages draw the categories in different places, from deep at up to 15 inches to deep at 17 to 20 inches. Read the listed depth, measure your bed with the topper on, and compare the two numbers. A sheet advertised as deep can still fall short on a bed with a thick topper.

Myth: A sheet that fit when new will keep fitting.

Reality: Cotton can change dimension in the wash, so recheck the fit after laundering. Circadian's published care line for its cotton sheets is to machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, tumble dry low or line dry, and skip fabric softener.

What If a Fitted Sheet Still Slips on a Memory Foam Mattress or Under a Topper?

Stack the fixes. Confirm the pocket clears the mattress and topper, add sheet straps, then slide a non-slip mat under the topper. A smooth cover gives a sheet little to grip, so one fix on its own often falls short on a thick bed.

These edge cases come up most.

    • A memory foam or other thick mattress near the top of the 10 to 15 inch range, plus a topper. The pocket has the least room here. Measure the full stack and confirm the listed depth clears it before you buy.
    • A topper that slides separately from the sheet. Secure the topper first with a non-slip mat, since a topper that moves drags the sheet corners with it.
    • A sheet that holds at the head but not the foot. Check orientation before you replace anything.
    • A sheet from any brand, whether Coyuchi or Circadian. The same rules apply. Measure, compare against the listed pocket depth, and add tension or friction only where the bed still needs it.

When every fix has been tried and the sheet is still shallower than your bed, replace the sheet instead of adding more hardware. Owners of the Circadian Organic Cotton Fitted Sheet can buy it alone, so the piece that slips or wears first is the only one that has to go.

Once the sheet stays put, check it again after the first wash. Cotton can change size in laundering, and a quick look at the corners tells you whether the fit held.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 15 inch pocket fitted sheet deep enough for my mattress?

The Circadian Organic Cotton Fitted Sheet has a 15 inch pocket that clears a deep mattress, or a standard mattress with a topper on it. Measure your mattress depth with the topper on before ordering if you are close to 15 inches, since a 15 inch pocket can pouch on a thin mattress.

Do sheet straps keep a fitted sheet from coming off?

Sheet straps attach to the corners of a fitted sheet and pull it tight, which helps on a bed where the sheet is the right depth but still lifts. They supplement a pocket that clears the mattress and topper.

How deep should a fitted sheet pocket be compared to the mattress?

The pocket should clear the total height of the bed, mattress and topper together. Depth categories vary by brand and publication, so measure the bed with the topper on and compare it to the depth listed on the product page.

What size sheet should I use for a deep mattress?

Choose your bed size first (twin, full, queen, or king), then check the pocket depth against the height you measured. A deep mattress needs a pocket that clears the full stack, so the listed depth matters as much as the bed size.

Can you buy a Circadian organic cotton fitted sheet on its own?

Yes. The Circadian Organic Cotton Fitted Sheet is sold on its own as well as inside the Organic Cotton Sheet Set, so you can replace the piece that wears first. It comes in Natural, and bedding has a 60 day return window from delivery.

How should you wash a cotton fitted sheet so it keeps fitting?

Circadian's published care line for its cotton sheets is to machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, tumble dry low or line dry, and skip fabric softener. The sateen feels noticeably softer by the third or fourth wash, and it is worth rechecking the fit after laundering.

WELL MADE AS PROMISED. Took a little while to get it but was worth the wait.

I am extremely grateful for the customer service I received. I live in Ontario, and my pillows were initially brought to my door with an unexpected additional delivery charge, which I politely declined. And in a very short time, I was proactively contacted by Jacob at Circadian who immediately sorted the situation, at no cost to me. And in a few short days, my pillows arrived. And I am sleeping well. Thank you, Jacob!

Well if there was a 10 star Circadian
Would get it. 5 nights in and a cervical curve and upright neck appears like a magic trick! Head tilting to right now centered. Sternomastacloid muscle hurting and pulling head stopped.

The buckwheat pillow is just simply amazing.

I have had long Covid for 5 long years. Recently learned of Ehler Danlos Hypermobil Syndrome. Each year my body was literally slipping unsupported. Neurologic symptoms appeared as well. Cervical collar recommended did nothing good.

3 years of PT nothing changed in my neck and spine.

Unable to sleep night after night. Tossing and turning in pain. I have had a dozen or more pillows recommended over 3 years. Didn't work at all.

Now 5 nights in 7 peaceful hours of sleep. Dreaming, REM sleep. Only change was Jacob's pillow. Thank you Jacob!

Finally, a pillow I actually love!

I’ve tried A LOT of pillows looking for the right balance of soft, comfortable, supportive, and natural, and this one is a winner.

The kapok fill is incredibly soft and fluffy without feeling like memory foam or one of those overly firm “supportive” pillows. I love that you can remove some of the fill and adjust the loft, because apparently my neck has opinions about pillow height. 😂

It’s also lightweight and breathable, which I really appreciate as someone who tends to sleep hot. The organic cotton cover feels great, and I love knowing the pillow is filled with natural kapok rather than synthetic materials.

The biggest surprise for me was how much I like the feel of kapok. It has that soft, almost down-like fluffiness without using down. I’ve been really impressed with it and would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a natural, non-toxic pillow that’s actually comfortable.

    Better sleep with these pillows

I ended up getting two because I wanted to try a couple different types of natural fibers to see what I like best. I ended up with the wool and buckwool pillows and love them both. I honestly can't really decide which I like better. Shipping was pretty quick and customizing the pillow was simple. I appreciate the emails with tips on how to do that. Thanks!
