What Size Pillowcase Do You Need? Standard, Queen, King

The pillowcase you need is the one cut for your pillow, and pillows come in five sizes. Standard is 20 by 26 inches, Queen 20 by 30, King 20 by 36, and body pillows run 20 by 54 or 20 by 72. Buy the case by the pillow rather than the bed, and check its depth, because a case cut for a thin pillow squeezes a full one flat.

This guide is for: Anyone who bought pillows in one size and a bed in another, anyone whose body pillow case rides up by morning, and anyone who set a pillow to the right height and then watched a case press it flat.
    Key Takeaways
    • A standard pillow is 20 by 26 inches, a queen 20 by 30, a king 20 by 36 and the common body pillow 20 by 54. Those come from the Sleep Foundation's pillow size guide. Circadian cuts cases to those dimensions plus a 20 by 72 for a full-length body pillow.
    • A queen mattress is 60 inches wide and a king is 76, per the Sleep Foundation's mattress size chart. So two queen pillows fill a queen bed edge to edge, and two king pillows fit across a king.
    • We read the sheet set page of sixteen bedding brands on 14 September 2026. Twelve print pillowcase inches and four print none. Among the twelve, the case that ships with a queen set runs from 26 to 32 inches long, so the size name alone does not tell you what you are buying.

Pillowcases come in five sizes, and the pillow decides which one you need.

Do pillowcases come in different sizes? They do, and five turn up in an American shop. A standard pillow is 20 by 26 inches. A queen is 20 by 30, a king is 20 by 36, and body pillows run 20 by 54 or 20 by 72. A case takes its name from the pillow it is cut for. The Sleep Foundation's pillow size guide lists the same three bed sizes and the 54 inch body.

The bed matters only because pillows sit side by side on one. The Sleep Foundation's mattress chart puts a twin at 38 inches wide, a full at 54, a queen at 60 and a king at 76. Two standard pillows span 52 inches. Two queen pillows span 60, which covers a queen mattress edge to edge. Two king pillows span 72 and fit a king with 4 inches to spare.

What size pillowcase fits a king pillow on a queen bed? A king case. A king pillow is 20 by 36 inches wherever it lies. The pair hangs 12 inches over the sides of a 60 inch mattress.

What sixteen bedding brands print for a pillowcase

Every brand prints the size name. The inches behind it are another matter. We read the sheet set page of sixteen bedding brands, ours included, and recorded what each publishes for the cases in the set. Twelve print inches on the product page, and those numbers disagree by as much as six. Coyuchi, Naturepedic and Avocado all print a case at 20 by 32 inches. Under the Canopy prints 30 by 20. Boll & Branch prints 20 by 30, and only on a collection page. Ours are Standard 20 by 26, Queen 20 by 30 and King 20 by 36.

So one word on the label covers cloth that differs by six inches, which is why a case called standard arrives too big on one pillow and too tight on another. Four of the sixteen brands print no inches at all.

Circadian sews its Organic Cotton Pillowcases in Standard, Queen and King, and its Body Pillow Case in both body lengths. The rest of this guide covers what the size name leaves out, which is how deep the case is cut and how it closes.

Depth is the measurement nobody prints on the package.

Should a pillowcase be bigger than the pillow? A little longer, never tighter. The trade convention is a case cut slightly past the pillow it is named for, so the open end drapes instead of stopping at the edge. Past that allowance the cloth flaps, and a case a full size too long bunches at your neck.

Why a case cut flat makes a full pillow feel harder

Length and width get printed. Depth almost never does. A pillow is a box, with a top, a bottom and several inches of side between them, and the case has to go around that girth. A case cut flat, as two 20 by 26 rectangles sewn together, has no cloth left to wrap a full pillow. Put one in and the cloth pulls tight, the sides go hard, and the pillow stands firmer than it did in your hands.

Are all pillowcases the same size? No, and not one of the sixteen pages states a depth. Department-store cases run short and shallow because they are cut for the thin polyester pillows sold beside them. Cotton then shrinks in the first hot wash, and a case that was already tight becomes one you fight onto the pillow.

How to measure a pillow in three numbers

How do you measure a pillow for a pillowcase? Take three numbers. Lay it flat and run a tape along one seam for the length and along the other for the width. A bed pillow will read close to 20 by 26, 20 by 30 or 20 by 36, which map onto standard, queen and king. Then set it the way you sleep on it and measure how thick it stands. Assume a case with no depth printed was cut flat.

Circadian's cases are sewn to the same dimensions as the pillows, Standard through King, and cut to full depth. Every Circadian pillow arrives about a third fuller than most people keep it, and the case is cut for that height. The cloth is a four-over-one sateen float of long-staple cotton woven at 300.

    Where a full-depth case has a cost:

    • On a thin pillow it leaves loose cloth at the sides, since the depth it was cut for sits empty
    • Cotton shrinks in the first washes, so a tight case gets tighter; a depth allowance has room to give
    • A sateen float snags more easily than a plain weave, so a case stretched over a hard edge wears there first

Body pillow cases come in two lengths, and most stop short of the pillow.

How long is a body pillow case? Two lengths are sold, and the length is the part that goes wrong. The Sleep Foundation's size guide gives the common body pillow as 20 by 54 inches. The full-length one runs 20 by 72. Circadian makes its own Body Pillow in both lengths.

Most body pillow cases are cut short of a 72 inch pillow. A body pillow is the one you hold, so it gets pulled and dragged up the bed all night, and a case that stops short has nothing to anchor it. The bare end works out of the bottom, and by morning the case is a wrinkled band around the middle.

Circadian's Organic Cotton Body Pillow Case comes in 20 by 54 and 20 by 72 inches, the two lengths we sew our own Body Pillow to. It slips on with no zipper and no buttons, which matters more here than on a bed pillow, because the whole of you is against it.

Body pillow cases sit outside most bedding lines, so the choice comes down to the pillow's own maker or a generic case. A case with no length given is most likely cut for the 54 inch size, which stops 18 inches short of a 72 inch pillow. Assume the shorter one when the page is silent.

Pick the length by the pillow you own:

    • Your 72 inch pillow keeps ending the night with the case around its middle: that is this case, cut to the full length
    • Your pillow is the common 54 inch size: measure it first, because a 72 inch case leaves a foot and a half of loose cloth
    • You want nothing hard against you: it slips on with no zipper and no buttons

Nothing hard belongs in the space where your face goes.

Why does a slip-on pillowcase with no zipper matter? A pillowcase is against your cheek for a third of your life. A zipper along one end puts hard teeth and a pull tab inside, and a side sleeper who hugs the pillow finds them. An envelope closure adds a flap, softer than a zipper and still a step at the edge.

Circadian's cases slip on, one layer of cloth with an open end and nothing hard anywhere on them. The sateen weave floats the yarn across the face of the cloth, so your cheek and hair move over the surface instead of catching. The float is structural, so it survives washing. A 2022 study in the Journal of Natural Fibers found that satin weaves let more air and water vapor through than plain weaves and hold less heat. So the smooth face also stays cool.

What the finish on the cloth can add

The other thing against your face is whatever the mill put on the cloth. Wrinkle-free, iron-free and easy-care finishes use formaldehyde resins. In 2010 the Government Accountability Office tested 180 textile items and reported the results as GAO-10-875. Most sat below the strictest industry limits. Ten came in above 75 parts per million, and four of those were bedding, including a 100 percent cotton pillowcase labeled wrinkle free and eco-friendly at 93.8 ppm. The report names allergic contact dermatitis as the risk of greatest concern. Reitz and colleagues tested pillowcases for formaldehyde release again in a 2022 paper in the AATCC Journal of Research.

The color of a Circadian case is the cotton's own, with no bleach and no optical brighteners, so it reads as a warm off-white rather than the blue-white of most bedding. The cases carry Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) license GOTS-10229 through Oregon Tilth, and the certifications page covers what that means. Ask me for the certificate and I will send it.

On an adjustable pillow, a tight case quietly undoes the height you set.

How does a pillowcase affect an adjustable pillow's height? More than most people expect, and always in one direction. A Circadian pillow arrives with a side zipper, and you take cotton, wool, kapok, latex or hulls out until your head sits where you want it. A tight case takes that back, pressing the material down across the top and squeezing it at the sides.

A pillow has one job, which is to keep your ear, shoulder and hip in a straight line while you sleep. Side sleeping wants the most height, because the gap between shoulder and ear is the biggest one a pillow has to fill. A back sleeper needs less, and a front sleeper almost none.

So set the height with the case on. Put the case on the full pillow, lie down the way you sleep, and take material out through the zipper until your ear is over your shoulder. With a shallow case you set the height too low to compensate, and the first night without it the pillow is wrong again.

Circadian's cases are cut for the pillow at its full arriving height. Makers such as Boll & Branch and Quince sell sateen cases in the same fiber. On an adjustable pillow from any maker, the depth of the case matters more than the name on it.

Four mistakes turn up again and again when people buy a case.

What do buyers get wrong about pillowcase size? Four things. The first is buying by the bed. A queen bed does not mean queen pillows, and many queen beds carry standard pillows because the sheet set came with standard cases. The second is putting a king case on a standard pillow, which leaves 10 inches of empty cloth to fold under the pillow and end up under your neck.

The third is forgetting that a body pillow case exists. People sleep on a body pillow bare for a year and then find it cannot be washed, because the case is the part that goes in the machine. The fourth is trusting the size name, which covers a six inch spread. Measure the pillow, then buy to the inches.

Euro, decorative and Oxford cases follow different rules.

When does the pillowcase advice change? In three situations, and the first is a pillow that is not a bed pillow. Euro pillows are 26 by 26 inches, per the Sleep Foundation's size guide, and they take a square sham. Travel pillows are small, and Circadian's are 12 by 16 inches. Circadian sells cases for neither size.

The second is a decorative pillow. An 18 by 18 or a 20 by 20 pillow is a cushion for the sofa or the front of the bed. It takes a cover with a closure at the back. Those covers are sold by the insert size, so the tape measure still works.

The third is an Oxford case, which carries a flat border of cloth sewn around the outside. The inner pocket is still cut to the pillow size, so a standard Oxford fits a standard pillow. The border adds inches to the outside that have nothing to do with fit. A pillow protector follows the same sizing, and a full-depth case has room for one.

Three sleepers measured their pillows and landed on three different cases.

Three sleepers with the same question end up in three different places once they measure the pillow.

Scenario 1: the queen bed with king pillows. A couple bought king pillows for a queen bed, and the sheet set came with standard cases. The pillows spent a year squeezed into cases 10 inches too short, and the couple assumed the pillows had gone hard. A pair of Circadian Organic Cotton Pillowcases in King, cut to 20 by 36, brought them back.

Scenario 2: the body pillow that sheds its case by morning. A side sleeper uses a 72 inch body pillow and has bought three cases for it, all of which ended the night around its middle. Each was cut for the common 54 inch size, leaving 18 inches of pillow free to climb into. The Circadian Organic Cotton Body Pillow Case in Body is cut to 20 by 72.

Scenario 3: the adjustable pillow that lost its height. A back sleeper set a full pillow to the right height and put a department-store case on it. A week later the pillow felt firmer than the one he had shaped. The case was cut flat for a thin pillow, and a full-depth case in the pillow's own size fixed it. The organic cotton sheets collection carries the cases in all three sizes, and the sheet set includes two.

A pattern Circadian sees in customer conversations

The letters that arrive before an order usually ask for the finished inches. One reader wanted a flat sheet for a bed no standard size fits, and that turned into a sheet cut to 100 by 122 inches. Another owned a wool duvet in an odd size and ordered a cover at 88 by 92. Both were shopping for a measurement rather than a size name. Send me the pillow's length, width and how thick it stands. The workshop can cut a case to it, because every piece is cut and sewn after the order goes in.

Buy the size that matches your pillow, then check the depth.

Which size pillowcase should you choose? The one that matches your pillow's length and width. Standard for 20 by 26, queen for 20 by 30, king for 20 by 36, and Body Jr or Body for a 54 or 72 inch body pillow. Buy by the pillow, not the bed, and if the page prints no inches, ask before you order.

Circadian's cases are sewn to the same dimensions as the pillows, in 300 count long-staple sateen, and they slip on with no zipper and no buttons. They are cut and sewn in New Jersey under Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) license GOTS-10229 through Oregon Tilth. The bed pillowcases are sold in pairs. The whole bedding collection is cut from the same cloth.

The next question is usually what goes over the duvet beside it, and 7 Things to Know Before Buying an Organic Cotton Duvet covers that part of the bed.

Which piece of organic bedding do you need?

Every piece below is the same cloth. 300 thread count organic cotton sateen, long-staple, in the cotton's own undyed color, cut and sewn in New Jersey. What changes is the part of the bed it covers.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What size pillowcase fits a king pillow?

A king pillowcase, cut for a 20 by 36 inch pillow. A king pillow on a queen bed still takes a king case, since the case goes around the pillow and the mattress only decides how the pillows sit. Check the depth as well as the length, because a king case cut flat for a thin pillow squeezes a full one.

Are all pillowcases the same size?

No. Bed pillowcases come in standard (20 by 26 inches), queen (20 by 30) and king (20 by 36), and body pillow cases in 54 and 72 inch lengths. The inches behind a size name vary as well. Across sixteen bedding brands read on 14 September 2026, the case sold with a queen sheet set ran from 26 to 32 inches long.

Should a pillowcase be bigger than the pillow?

A little longer and never tighter. The trade convention is a case cut slightly longer than the pillow so the open end drapes past it. The bigger question is depth, since a full pillow is several inches thick and a case cut flat for a thin one clamps it down. Circadian's cases are cut to full depth.

What size are body pillow cases?

Body pillow cases come in two lengths, 20 by 54 inches for the common body pillow and 20 by 72 for a full-length one. The Sleep Foundation lists 54 inches as the standard, and most cases are cut for that length, so they ride up on a 72 inch pillow. Circadian's body case comes in 20 by 54 and 20 by 72, one for each length of the body pillow we make.

Do pillowcases come in different sizes?

Yes, five in common use. Standard is 20 by 26 inches and fits one across a twin or two across a queen bed. Queen is 20 by 30, and two fill a 60 inch queen mattress edge to edge. King is 20 by 36, and two fit a 76 inch king. Body cases are 20 by 54 or 20 by 72.

    Does pillowcase size matter?

It matters for fit and height. A case that is too long folds under the pillow and bunches at your neck. A case that is too short or too shallow squeezes the pillow, which makes it feel firmer than you set it. On an adjustable pillow that takes away the height you chose.

Measure your pillow, then buy the case cut for those inches in Standard, Queen or King.

I am extremely grateful for the customer service I received. I live in Ontario, and my pillows were initially brought to my door with an unexpected additional delivery charge, which I politely declined. And in a very short time, I was proactively contacted by Jacob at Circadian who immediately sorted the situation, at no cost to me. And in a few short days, my pillows arrived. And I am sleeping well. Thank you, Jacob!

Would get it. 5 nights in and a cervical curve and upright neck appears like a magic trick! Head tilting to right now centered. Sternomastacloid muscle hurting and pulling head stopped.

The buckwheat pillow is just simply amazing.

I have had long Covid for 5 long years. Recently learned of Ehler Danlos Hypermobil Syndrome. Each year my body was literally slipping unsupported. Neurologic symptoms appeared as well. Cervical collar recommended did nothing good.

3 years of PT nothing changed in my neck and spine.

Unable to sleep night after night. Tossing and turning in pain. I have had a dozen or more pillows recommended over 3 years. Didn't work at all.

Now 5 nights in 7 peaceful hours of sleep. Dreaming, REM sleep. Only change was Jacob's pillow. Thank you Jacob!

Finally, a pillow I actually love!

I’ve tried A LOT of pillows looking for the right balance of soft, comfortable, supportive, and natural, and this one is a winner.

The kapok fill is incredibly soft and fluffy without feeling like memory foam or one of those overly firm “supportive” pillows. I love that you can remove some of the fill and adjust the loft, because apparently my neck has opinions about pillow height. 😂

It’s also lightweight and breathable, which I really appreciate as someone who tends to sleep hot. The organic cotton cover feels great, and I love knowing the pillow is filled with natural kapok rather than synthetic materials.

The biggest surprise for me was how much I like the feel of kapok. It has that soft, almost down-like fluffiness without using down. I’ve been really impressed with it and would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a natural, non-toxic pillow that’s actually comfortable.

I ended up getting two because I wanted to try a couple different types of natural fibers to see what I like best. I ended up with the wool and buckwool pillows and love them both. I honestly can't really decide which I like better. Shipping was pretty quick and customizing the pillow was simple. I appreciate the emails with tips on how to do that. Thanks!
