In collaboration with Taryn Maria Non-toxic finds on YouTube

Morning neck stiffness is usually a height problem wearing a firmness costume.

Taryn sleeps on her side, wakes with a stiff neck, and is currently on an orthopedic foam pillow she does not like. Foam is the material that keeps giving way under load, so the height you fall asleep at is never the height you wake up in.

For Taryn's viewers

The one she is testing, and the two she would step to next.

The quiz sent Taryn to wool and that is what went in the box. If wool holds her height but she wants more of it, the hybrid and the buckwheat are the two rungs above, and they are worth knowing about before you need them.

Organic Wool

You stay cool because you stay dry. Each fiber pulls up to 30 percent of its own weight in moisture off your skin and holds it inside the strand, so the air at your face never turns damp and heat keeps leaving your body. Wool also holds its height under a shoulder in a way an airy fill does not, which is what a side sleeper is really shopping for. Certified organic across the fill and the cover together on licence GOTS-10229 through Oregon Tilth.

One step firmer
Circadian Buckwool Hybrid pillow with two chambers Circadian Buckwool Hybrid pillow with two chambers shown in a bedroom

Buckwool Hybrid

One insert, a divider down the middle, and each chamber has its own zipper. Hulls carry the load underneath so the height does not move overnight, and a layer of organic wool sits at the face so your cheek meets something soft instead of something granular. It is the step to take if wool alone is close but goes a little flat by morning. Organic cotton cover.

The firmest we make
Circadian USA-grown buckwheat pillow Circadian USA-grown buckwheat pillow shown in a bedroom

USA-Grown Buckwheat

Hulls flex under the weight of your head and then interlock, so the height you set at bedtime is the height you wake up in. Ours are air-jet polished first, which breaks the rough pyramid shape into flat pieces and cuts the shifting noise by up to 68 percent, and that noise is why most people quit a hull pillow in week one. Grown in the United States, sterilized with ultraviolet light rather than a chemical wash. Organic cotton cover.

Six natural fills, one workshop.

Every pillow shares the same organic cotton cover and comes out of the same partner workshop in New Jersey, which has been making natural bedding since 1981.

A note from Circadian

Why we built a page for Taryn Maria.

Taryn told us her viewers keep asking her about pillows and she has not found one she wants to point them at. That is a real gap rather than a marketing opening, and the honest way to fill it is to explain how the fills differ and let people pick, which is what this page tries to do.

On her own answers she is a side sleeper with morning neck stiffness who runs warm only occasionally. Those three facts point at wool, because the neck stiffness is about how much height survives until morning and the heat question is about moisture rather than temperature. She is getting the fill the quiz picked for her, and if it turns out she wants more support than wool gives, the hybrid is the next step and we will say so.

Two of our six fills carry the Global Organic Textile Standard across the finished pillow on licence GOTS-10229 through Oregon Tilth. Those are the organic cotton and the organic wool. The hybrid, the hulls and the kapok carry organic cotton covers and sit outside the scope of that standard, so we describe them by material rather than borrowing a word they cannot hold.

The adjustment is the part worth filming.

Every Circadian pillow arrives full, about a third more than most people keep, because it is easier to take some out than to wish you had more. Open the side zipper, take some out a handful at a time, and stop when your head sits level with your shoulders. On the wool, peel a full sheet off the outside rather than tearing at the middle, and the pillow keeps its shape while it loses its height. Nothing about that is precious. If you go too far, it goes back in.

What Taryn's viewers ask first

I wake up with a stiff neck. Which one?

Start by treating it as a height question. If your head sits lower than your shoulders by morning, the fill has given way under you and the answer is a material that holds. Wool holds better than foam and hulls hold better than wool. Never change your sleeping position to suit a pillow, because the pillow is the part that is supposed to move.

Is wool hot to sleep on?

Damp air at your face is what stops your body cooling itself, so the useful measure is dryness rather than temperature. Wool moves up to 30 percent of its weight in moisture into the fiber and away from your skin, which keeps the surface dry and lets heat keep leaving. It behaves nothing like a wool sweater over your chest.

Does any of this need special washing?

The cover unzips and goes in the machine cold, then line dry. The fill stays out of the water. Air the pillow in indirect sun for a couple of hours every few months, and each one ships with a care card written for the material inside it.

How long does an order take?

Every pillow is made to order in one New Jersey workshop. Four to seven days to build, plus transit, and a tracking number goes out the day it leaves. Free shipping. Sleep on it for up to 60 nights and return it for a full refund if it is not right for you.
